Heath Ledger Nominated for Golden Globe

Though The Dark Knight was otherwise shut-out at the Golden Globes, it did garner the most important nomination IMHO - Heath Ledger's Best Supporting Actor nod for The Joker.

I'm disappointed in the Golden Globes nominations, otherwise. That said, I'm hopeful the Academy might be more amiable to more than just the one nod for TDK. All things considered, though, as long as Ledger wins Best Supporting Actor in both awards ceremonies, I'll be ok. His performance was one of the greatest pieces of acting in motion picture history, IMHO.

EDIT: Also, TDK broke another record. DVD and Blu-Ray Sales.

Over 600,000 Blu-ray copies and three million DVD copies of "The Dark Knight" have sold in the film's first day of release. The previous Blu-ray record holder was "Iron Man" which took a week to sell 400,000 copies.

Yeah, I saw that.

I was initially pretty pissed that it was shut out of the main categories. I'll survive, though. Thanks to some reassuring from someone awesome on this board, I think I'll be content even if it doesn't win any major awards. It's still an amazing cinematic achievement in my opinion and that's all that matters.

Regardless, I was still very psyched to see Heath Ledger with a Best Supporting Actor nomination. He is definitely going to win, and to quote Michael Caine, if he doesn't, I want to see the bloody actor who gave the better performance.

Also, side topic, I was amused to see Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard get nominated for individual scores (Zimmer for Frost/Nixon and Newton Howard for Defiance) when they were collectively shut out for their work on The Dark Knight, especially given all of the hubbub and controversy regarding the legitimacy of their recognizability from the Academy (even if it doesn't exactly correlate with the Globes).

^ Plus you may get to keep something very important to you.

As for Ledger: he deserves the nomination.

I see two outcomes

1. The actor graciously acknowledges the other actors in the categories particularly Ledger and doesn't give the award away.

2. "I can't accept this award and i'm giving it to his widow" then Michelle comes up and gives speech making it the highlight for the night.

Look no farther than Aaron Eckhart who was, by far, the best thing about The Dark Knight.

I disagree. I thought Eckhart's work was fantastic, but Ledger's was simply better.

Eckhart did do a great job, but he really got eclipsed by Ledger. Everyone did.

Thankfully, the Globes are a different group and a different format, a combo of Emmy's and Oscars.

My hope for the Oscar noms are...

Ledger - Best Supporting Actor
Zimmer/Howard - Best Original Score
Nolan - Best Director
Film Overall - Best Picture
Nolan & Nolan - Best Screenplay

Those are the ones I hope get nominated and win.

It would be nice of Eckhart also got a nod, but I doubt such, as Ledger just owned the film. Oldman did a great job too. It's a shame they don't have a "best cast" award. LOL.

Indeed. Everyone turned out a great performance. I mean this was an ensemble where everyone (and I mean everyone) in the main cast put in their all. No one seemed bored. Everyone seemed like they were doing their career best. That's a testament to the material and the directing right there.

Yes, that and the (albeit) rare occasion that the Oscar's does not nominate every film that the Golden Globes nominate, since usually if you get nominated for a Golden Globe, you are considered a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination. I think this year will also be a rare exception to that rule, with so many good films out. Either some will get lost in the shuffle or the Academy will lean one way towards a certain film that perhaps the Golden Globes excluded (like, for instance, I believe The Wrestler will get a Best Picture nod even though it wasn't nominated for Best Picture by the Globes).

I think the technical awards (Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Special Effects, Best Sound) will be a shoe-in, awards that the Globes don't recognize. I hope Zimmer and Newton Howard will get a Best Original Score nomination, however I'm 50/50 on its chances.

As for the big awards...I dunno. I am not as hopeful as I once was. I would absolutely love for the film to get nominated for Best Picture (my nuts :( ), for Chris Nolan to get nominated for Best Director, and for him and his brother to get nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Ledger is a shoe-in, though. He will get nominated, and he will win.

Not in a year this crowded. There's so many actor contenders this year it's going to be crazy who ends up getting nominated. I think Ledger will likely face off against Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) and probably Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder. I have no idea who will be the fifth candidate. I'll laugh my ass off if it's Tom Cruise, though.
