Healthy Recipes Needed

So a about a month ago, I saw the doctor about my blood pressure, and he told me that even at my age (32) I am at risk for a heart attack.

So I've been changing my diet, trying to cut down on cholestrol and fats, etc.

Foods that are safe to eat are fish, turkey, and chicken, while foods I should try to avoid are breads/cereals, marbled beef, and pork.

The only thing I really know how to cook involves the stuff I should be avoiding. So I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!

my favorite thing to create is this fish and rice meal

first

take the whiting fish out of the freezer put them in a deep pan skin down
then pore olive oil about randomly and then sprinkle cayenne pepper atop the fish add a little caraway seeds and other seasoning to boot as tastes like.
put a bag of frozen veggies atop the fish sprinkle more seasonings and salt and olive oil chopped garlic ;P
into the oven for like forty minutes to an hour or so at like 400 about
the lower the temp the less it browns and the longer it takes to cook
after twenty minutes get the water in the pot for curried rice ..
add salt curry powder about enough for the rice to change colors to yellow but not too much to over power the fish after it is cooked.
cook the rice till it has absorbed the water remember one cup rice to two cups water. :)

take the fish out when the whiting is opaque and cooked maybe even crisp depending.

spatula the fish and veggies onto a bed of curried rice then eat... hungry I am.. now.

Good for you taking his advice seriously. :)

I recommend getting a wok if you don't have one. Keep lean meat and veggies on hand...you could chop them and keep them in the freezer if you want. Stir fry in some very healthy oil, it doesn't take much, and serve with brown rice or a wild rice mix.

The great thing about stir fry is that you can season it however you like, and it's easy to avoid too much sodium that way. It just takes some time adjusting to your tastes.

I'm too lazy to be writing out recipies. If you get onto Ebay, buy yourself a couple of Weight Watchers cookbooks. They are low fat and healthy in other respects.

Try some recipe books based on the Mediterranean diet. It's all low in fat and no red meat. For some odd reason, I cannot eat grass fed meat (beef, lamb/sheep) so I eat a lot of organic food or meatless meals. TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) is great stuff, and despite it's bad reputation from people, Tofu is a great source of protein.

If I want something fast, I'll take some chicken and pour some fat free Italian dressing over it, stick it in the oven for a bit, and have some broccoli or other veggies with it.

I'd definitely suggest trying oatmeal for breakfast in the morning, if that is okay for your diet. I didn't think I liked oatmeal at all but I gave it another shot and now I love it. The instant packs take no time at all, and they're quite filling. I think it's also good for lowering cholesterol.

I don't know about you, but if I start the day off "right" then the rest of my meals throughout the day are more likely to be nutritious as well.

^yeah, startin' off with the right kind of breakfast is a good idea. I can't eat oatmeal (well I can if I don't want to poop for a couple of days), but I do eat oatmeal raisin breakfast bars, and a banana everyday for breakfast. sometimes I'll have some grapes or apple slices, or applesauce too.

umm, as far as the other meals go, I eat all kinds of turkey products. Jennie-O and Honeysuckle White brands make some good italian sausage and breakfast sausage. I also like Oscar-Meyer brand turkey smoked sausage which is excellent when grilled. I make chili with ground turkey and I eat turkey burgers (sometimes).

you can still eat a lot of the same things, just with turkey substitutes.

and I'll chime in and agree with opali and suggest stir-fry stuff. it's tasty, healthy, and can be made even without a wok.

Honestly, avoid the breakfast bars and become a label reader. Those things are packed with too much sugar and preservatives. The same with the Jennie-O and Oscar Meyer stuff. ICK! Tofurkey brats and dogs are awesome. I used to do the instant oatmeal packages, but again, too much sugar.

Check out TVP and associated recipes as well as Quorn. You might also like Tabouli. It's delicious.

I'm fond of the saying, "read the label, set a better table."

considering I generally avoid sugary foods and stuff with loads of chemicals in my other meals, I don't think my 2 breakfast bars a day is gonna kill me.

I eat vegetables that I grow on my patio, and the only beverages I drink are water, a daily cup of coffee, and a few beers on the weekend. I haven't had a soda in over 6 years.

Tofurkey brats and dogs are awesome.

umm, to use your expression, ICK!

no thanks, I like real meat. the last time I had a meat substitute product I had an incredible urge to go outside and crap on my car.

I AM NOT QUORNHOLIO!!

off topic: you're avatar is farkin' cool JP.

Your loss, but I used to be like you -- only a meat eater. Seriously, the Tofurkey is very tasty. TVP, when mixed with dry spices and then hydrated tastes exactly like meat. Quorn is very delicious. Heck, I have a teen who eats too much garbage at his mom's house who just loves the Quorn chicken nuggets.

Your loss

not really.

I do also eat fruits and vegetables. :) did you miss those parts of my posts?

it's not just about taste, it's also about the texture and consistency, the smell, and the presentation.

I'm wonderin' if you eat that stuff just 'cause of the supposed health benefits, out of concern for the environment, or out of concern over the treatment of animals? and if you still eat any real meat at all?

I made some kick ass spaghetti with Tofo a few months ago.
It was my first time using it and I was very impressed with myself -- so much so that I belched rather loudly and wished I had a beer to wash it down.

As for "real meat", about the only meat that doesn't cause me digestive or other issues is chicken, pork, and fish. If you've taken a biology class you'd know that beef and other meat is really a very little gain in energy on the food cycle.

ok, belching is always fun. :)

just wonderin'. :)
