Heads up: Trailer for Solomon Kane plus new REH publication

Superhero Hype has the trailer for Solomon Kane (starring James Purefoy from Rome) here.

Those familiar with Solomon Kane will know that Stephen Sommers ripped off Solomon Kane's look for Van Helsing (a lot of internet comments by those unfamiliar with Solomon Kane and the character's longevity have erroneously claimed the opposite).

A new Robert E. Howard collection is also going to be published soon. It's the latest in Gollancz's line of Big Black Books - really nice hardcover editions of fantasy literature - following Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft and The Complete Chronicles of Conan. The new edition is Conan's Brethren and it collects all of Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane, Kull, and Bran Mak Morn stories in a single volume, including extras like synopses and first drafts of uncompleted stories.

It's available for pre-order from Amazon, Amazon UK and Play.

The next edition of the Big Black Book line will be The Complete Lyonesse by Jack Vance, currently scheduled for publication in January.

I'm catching a screening of Soloman Kane on Thursday at the film festival here in Toronto, I really had no idea what to expect before seeing this trailer but now I'm really stoked!

Sweet! Trailer looks decent. Maybe we can get a series of Howard films rolling, unless they fuck it up. Crosses fingers.

That's a very cool trailer. Hopefully the movie lives up to it.

Now to add the Solomon Kane stories to my reading list. :)

Looks like it was filmed in a really pedestrian manner, and I see the director is a novice but maybe the material will help buoy it up, looks like it might have some fun elements.

From Robert E. Howard, pulp writer of Conan the Barbarian. Premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Looks sort of like Van Helsing, only without Stephen Sommers's overblown, excessive, gaudy special effects.

Re: Solomon Kane trailer

Eh.

There are one or two nice images - who doesn't like a villain in robes whose face can't be seen? Giant fiery thing is also good - but the rest of it looks like every generic fantasy/action movie ever.

There's the outside possibility this doesn't suck (certainly the lead looks charismatic and confident enough), but the action sequences seen in the trailer seem... well, limp.

Re: Solomon Kane trailer

I always loved the old Solomon Kane stories and comic books, so I'm hoping this movie does them justice.

And if gets people to read the original Robert E. Howard stories, that's a good thing.

Any idea when this is supposed to come out?

Re: Solomon Kane trailer

I posted this a little while ago here. The movie has a good cast and I'm a big fan of REH and the genre in general, so I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Solomon Kane trailer

Is it based at all on any of the original stories?

^ According to a review in aintitcoolnews (which I'm too lazy to go and link, but which should still be up) it's an original and origin story; REH never bothered with an origin story with Kane or most of his characters. According to the extremely positive review, the movie does set the character up nicely so that any of Howard's stories could be adapted into a sequel.
