TrekCore.com, your source for everything Trek, and the host of the only collection of complete episode screen captures for every episode and film of every series, has just added something new and (at the moment) exclusive: HD DVD Screen Captures!

Restored and enhanced, with all new special effects, the HD DVD screen caps are roughly twice the size of the standard DVD caps; and considerably higher in quality.

Enjoy!!

Very nice, though I agree with those who say the new CGI shots should have had some film grain added to better match the rest of the episode.

---------------

A little math proves they are.

They are exactly 1440 by 1080 pixels, which is a 4:3 ratio.

Lol, thanks, I just realized I'm at work, on a 16:9 monitor which stretches everything to fit the screen... lol wow do I need a vacation ;)

The HD screen captures are beautiful! The only thing I would like to see was the new matte painting of the planetscape and the ancient ruins near the beginning of the episode.

The new CGI matte/panning shot of the Crater ruins looked great in the episode.

It really did. I was hoping they would start the beamdown effect on that shot, to add some life to it, like they did with the new Amok Time shots.

*Sigh*

I still don't like the look of that cgi E. It's nice enough for what it is, but it just doesn't look convincing to me.

It definitely looks better than it did on broadcast TV, which varies in quality depending on the station you're seeing it on. Heck, you could almost pass off the non-space footage as something that was filmed 40 hours ago, not 40 years.

Unfortunately, even though the show was one of the most expensive shows at the time, the limitations of the sets and planetscapes is pretty pronounced. Also, we super-fans can excuse the 60's hairdo's (particularly the women), but it's the very first thing that a causal viewer keys in on, that dates the show.

I remember reading an ebook about the production of Trials and Tribbleations, and it took great effort to replicate the different production specs from TOS. The bright key lights, and dated makeup effects just being a few.

This is an episode I missed due to my CBS station switching the airtimes and me not finding out about it until the day after. Seeing these screencaps just makes me want the HD-DVDs even more. :bolian:

Glad everyone seems to have enjoyed them as much as me! I've asked for a cap of the establishing ruins shot they inserted into the remastered - hopefully it'll be up in a day or so. And rumor has it the next episode's under development :p
