HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abrams

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

I always liked the Michael Crichton film Westworld, not Futureworld. Hopefully, J.J. and HBO will make Westworld a successful series. The premise of the original was fascinating.

This surely ought to be a cgi-free zone; the whole point of Westworld (and other attractions in the same venue) would be that it's 'real', physical, not just good stuff on a 3d screen.

But they'll have to show a suitably 'distressed' Gunslinger as it continues to attack, even after a lot of its exterior has been burned away.

I have to ask: Would a western-themed fantasy park really be a hot draw these days? Wouldn't ZombieWorld or SteamPunkWorld be more commercial?

Great point. Hopefully they will take some creative license and set the drama in at a minimum a theme park like Universal or Disney.

"Westworld" is actually only a part of the larger amusement park named Delos so ZombieWorld, et. al. are distinct possibilities.

Heh. I know my brain is tired from work when I misread the title as being a new version of Waterworld. Derp... :ack:

After all these years, I still wanna know why they equipped the Gunslinger with infra-red vision. What the heck was it for?

If he's going to go berserk and start hunting the tourists, it comes in really handy. If he's working normally and just doing his job, not so much.

Stick Dollhouse and Caprica into a blender and you get the new Westworld?

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

...neat but limited concept.... Good for one movie. Maybe two, if you include ZombieWorld (with a zombie apocalypse !)

A dinosaur theme park? Another neat but limited concept.

"Louche" is not a word I've encountered before

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

I've never seen the original movie, but based on the premise, cast, and people behind the scenes, this has a huge amount of potential.

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

Nice teaser. I'll definitely be checking this out. In the meantime, I really should watch the original for the first time.

The author of the article needs to do a proper fact check. He claims the mini-series is based on a Michael Crichton novel instead of a Michael Crichton film.

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

That is an intrguing trailer. It's got a lot of talented people both in front of and behind the camera, so this has a lot of potential.

Re: HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abram

"...produced by J.J. Abrams"

Sigh.

Why the sigh? Shit - he's hot right now. He's the George Lucas and Steven Spielberg of today's sci-fi entertainment. I say go JJ - give us a great Wars flick and hopefully use the fact that this will be on HBO to your advantage. [see Game of Thrones for sex, nudity, and violence as your guide]

Lucas and Spielberg had soul. Spielberg especially. Abrams, not so much.

That being said, while his movies are glossy drek, his Tv series are actually pretty good.

I hope they have really stopped only to better the script because they are artists and not because the script is too terrible to work with.

While I'm not a fan of all the reboots I will give this a chance. I liked both films, it was the kind of movie that was shown on Dec 31th in my country when I was a little kid and I was allowed to watch it.

That is a little concerning, it seems to me that there would have to be a pretty serious issue for them to halt production.

They just need to write in some Deadwood characters to appear in cameos in Westworld and I will be happy.
