Part INDIANA JONES/DA VINCI CODE, part GHOST tentpole about the fictional superhero that appears in D.C. Comic books. He used archaic weaponry and large, artificial wings attached to a harness made of the Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman in his fight against supervillains. Based on the DC comic.

If true this would be kinda cool...I liked the way Smallville dealt with Hawkman...so it would be interesting to see how this could play out. :bolian:

Personally, I'd love the Tim Truman/John Ostrander/Graham Nolan Hawkworld version of Hawkman, but Warners sounds like they want Carter Hall.

Hawkman is something that's never made much sense to me.

It could, of course, but for some reason it always gets overcomplicated, with Carter and Katar existing in the same timeframe and, according to Wikipedia, doing things that don't even try to make sense. The really bad thing is I've read those JSA issues!

It all so obviously misses the point of a reincarnating superhero that it strikes me as a little bit willfully retarded. I mean, that's the Hawk's real hook, right? They reincarnate. That's the cool part. The hitting people with a mace shit, the space fascist shit, that's all just a bonus.

Also, why can't the Hawks have working wings? At least the Thanagarian Hawks? Warren Worthington got working wings, and he's not a tenth as potentially cool.

I really wish DC would just reboot its movies and go with a Marvel model leading up to a JLA movie.

I saw this earlier today. I loved the way the Hawks were portrayed in Justice League...and how Hawkman has been written the last few years in the comics. This doesn't surprise me that they are developing this. I'm sure Geoff Johns has a slew of projects he would like to see adapted into live action.

DC Ent clearly has no wish to copy what Marvel Studios is doing with their movies. I think they just want to establish that they can deliver a critically acclaimed and box office success before they go about establishing a movie universe like Marvel has.

No, bashing people with medieval weaponary while wearing a hawk themed costume is his selling point. The reincarnation or the space alien stuff is just the icing.

But that's all DC has been doing with their movies.

Granted, the only series that have been successful have been Batman and Superman (with Supes being rebooted 2.5 times).

That's why I am hoping GL gets some good numbers at the BO next month. I feel future DC superhero films kinda hinge on GL's success or failure.

I saw that earlier this week. Pretty keen.

And they absolutely nailed Hal Jordan's character.

Well, if that's what people think the selling point of Hawkman is, it's no wonder why the Hawks have always been the greatest continuing commercial and critical failure DC's classic lineup of characters has to offer. Including Aquaman. Anybody can wail on people with a mace. But a love story that stretches from ancient Egypt to futuristic Thanagar? Now that gets me hard. It's an unrivaled fountain of possible stories that don't rely on the frankly limited appeal of a Conan the Barbarian knockoff with wings that don't move glued to his back.

(Hawkworld aside, of course. I've never had the pleasure of reading it, but what I've read of it leads me to believe it's really very good.)

I don't have anything against Hawkman... but I really feel that this movie would not do well financially. I think Joe Q Public is going to think it silly. I see another Jonah Hex.

Nah. Blame the reboots and retcons. Hawkman's history is a muddled mess, and that's made the character difficult, if not impossible, to use -- creators can't get their head around him, editors can't get their heads around the baggage, and so Hawkman languishes on the shelf.

But a love story that stretches from ancient Egypt to futuristic Thanagar? Now that gets me hard.
That was a (relatively recent) retcon intended to make sense of Hawkman's continuity and history.

The problem, really, was DC's reaction to Hawkworld. Rather than use it as it was intended -- as a modern and updated origin for the Silver Age Hawkman -- DC decided that Katar Hol was just coming to earth "now" (or, rather, 1989), and that made the Silver Age unworkable. Continuity implants were done to try and make sense of what DC had just done, but after a while Hawkman collapsed under his own weight, to the point where Morrison wasn't allowed to use Hawkman in the "Big Seven" JLA because there was too much baggage to deal with.

It's an unrivaled fountain of possible stories that don't rely on the frankly limited appeal of a Conan the Barbarian knockoff with wings that don't move glued to his back.
I disagree. When I read a Hawkman story, I just want to see the Hawks flying around and wailing on people with their awesome maces! :)

I'm sure people thought the same thing about Iron Man and Thor once.
