Since there was some confusion expressed earlier, I thought I'd lay out the 'experience dynamic' in terms of each character, as per the pilot:
McGarrett: Army officer
Chin Ho: 'Seasoned'/veteran cop who worked with McGarrett's father, but was forced off the police force due to accusations of corruption
Danno: Veteran cop who transfered to Hawaii from New Jersey
Kono: 'Rookie' about to graduate from the Police Academy

McGarrett may be the leader of the group, but he isn't the most experienced when it comes to handling actual police work; that honor goes to Chin Ho, with Danno being the next most experienced.
McGarrett was actually a Navy officer. He graduated from Annapolis, spent a few years in Naval Intelligence, and then a few more years as a SEAL. He was a Lieutenant Commander at the time of the pilot episode.

Sorry for being picky. I'm a military brat. :D

I thought he went from SEAL to Naval Intelligence like Magnum did. He wasn't with a team but alone with Army MPs when the convoy was attacked.

Here was the original title sequence for this show:

But then they changed it to make the music more like the original:

2nd one is better.

Psycho ringtone on his phone for his ex-wife. :guffaw:
That was awesome I know some buddies who should get that..

I liked it
Series: Will watch again, surely.
Its a better way to spend the 10 pm Monday hr than with Horatio Yeaaaaaaaa!

You might be right, but I'm pretty sure when the governor was talking about his career, it was the other way around. Going from the SEALs to ONI would make more sense, though, in my opinion.

Yeah, I got McGarrett's military service record wrong. :) Chin Ho and Danno still have him beat, though, when it comes to actual police experience.

Now, the real question is...will there be an NCIS/NCIS:LA crossover? There's a major Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, after all. :shifty:

I watched the pilot, and while I like the show, I'm glad they got their "Chinese" episode out of the way. Hopefully they got that out of their system and never do it again.

What's "Chinese episode" suppose to mean. 5-0 was always like a state based FBI who played the anti espionage role as well as law enforcement. The main villain and special nemesis of McGarrett was Chinese agent Wo Fat.

Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiah might supplant Vietnam in the new version but Japan nor North Korea have replaced China as the threat in the Pacific. And one of the main team is a Chinese, or mostly Chinese/American cop Chin Ho. If they go in Danno's daughter being a target and McGarrett family already blown away I can see the Chin and Kono families also being called into the storylines.

Btw, is it just me or is Grace Park way skinny in this? Almost looks anorexic.
Oh yeah, another scrawny chick to kick the ass of bad guys.

Warped 9: Against women's self-defense classes.

Just because she's "scrawny" doesn't mean she can't defend herself or fight-off attackers. Fiancée of a friend of mine is no bigger than Ms. Park, in fact she's probably smaller, and she's a correctional officer in a men's prison and even is working to get into the FBI and she's more than capable of defending herself and passes all of her self-defense/training classes.

Knowing how to attack, where to attack, knowing how to use your strengths and overpower your opponent is more important than bulk. A kick to the chest, the junk, or the head by a woman Ms. Park's size, in hard shoes or boots is going to put any many down, or at the very least hurt and give him pause. A bigger woman, sure, physics tells it'd hurt more, but 98-lb woman still can carry a lot of power behind her punches and kicks.
The problem with your theory is that I know how to use my strengths, use the physics and the leverage, hit the vulnerable points, and I can use Grace Park for a dumbell to do curls. A 98 lbs woman can carry a lot of power behind her punches, a man twice her size can carry a lot more. When I see Grace Park win the heavyweight UFC I'll take your statement seriously. As it stands, watching her fight is as realistic as watching someone shoot a phaser. There's nothing wrong with it but don't try to tell me I'm not suspending my disbelief.

Had the theme song playing in my head all day. Thought I'd post the original opening sequence...

I also want to add that I was impressed with Will Yun Lee's performance as one of the bad guys last night. He's a good actor.
Yep, that's still cool. I love that theme.

Every cop show always has to do their "Chinese smugglers/slaves" episode or a Chinatown epsiode. Every CSI, every L&O, every canceled and long running cop show. It's like a rule of American television. I think it was last year that both Without a Trace and Numb3rs did episodes on "Ghost Brides".

I used to hate them but now I look forward to them because they're hilarious. Like the writers want to add some diversity or international intrigue, but all they can think of are Chinese women being abused and put into storage containers.

All played by Korean actors.

Same dif. ;)

Yeah, my past experience is that they usually make a comment about the body not being found with the hero making some kind of "dammit!" reaction. These people were way too happy.

Well, the audience can have an idea the character isn't dead and still have the characters thinking otherwise. I'm sure it was a way of hedging bets. Don't kill him, so he can be used in future episodes, but don't say anything either, in case Marsters decides never to come back.

I had ready so many negative reviews of this I was almost dreading watching it on my DVR. I watched the original with my mom and had really fond memories of it, but I knew this was going to be a very different animal.

Well, I wasn't disappointed. It was a very different show. Some of the themes (no pun intended) were the same, but overall it's a very modern slam bang type of cop show. I was really impressed by the action. Some of it beat out stuff I've seen in action movies. I loved the military stuff in the beginning, and that shot of Steve jumping just as the car hit the one he slid on was really cool.

I enjoyed the humor and it kept the show from being a "Dark and Gritty(tm)" show. It was serious enough (especially considering the opening) but overall there was a healthy balance.

As a side note it was cool seeing several actors who have been in scifi/fantasy shows all in one episode (even if only briefly). :)
