Having issues installing Windows 7 RC1

I'm getting an error straight away:

I never had any of these issues when I installed the Beta. Anyone else hit this? It scans but can't find the driver.

Macbook Pro, 2.4GHz, 200Gb HDD, 4GB RAM, VMware 2.0.

Did you install the VMWare tools? I used VirtualBox (well, I did before I liked Win7 so much I switched it to my Boot Camp partition) and VB installs all the CD drivers ahead of time, like a real bootup installation. I don't know if VMWare does that. I haven't had a single problem installing, whether it was on VirtualBox or on my Boot Camp partition.

iMac Intel Core Duo 1.83Ghz 17", 120GB HDD, 2GB RAM, Boot Camp

The tools won't install unless the OS is running, which is dumb. It's like trying to jump except you're standing on your coat.

I use VMware for testing, but my XP is Bootcamped (it's a work laptop so I have to do as I'm told) although I run it virtually.

Hm. That is odd.
Have you tried using Virtual Box? It's free, and it works almost flawlessly.
It may not be VMware, but it does the job and I use it often.

I may consider it. Depends what work says after we sprang for a VM licence!

I'd be interested to see how Virtual PC works in Windows 7 running XP Mode, cos then I'll be running Windows XP on Windows 7 on Mac OS X 10.5!

It's like one of those China dolls where a little person is inside a little person and so on. :D

Actually they are Russian (Mastroika i think is the name).

I haven't tried install Windows 7 into a virtual system on a Mac yet but it wouldn't suprise me if the vendors haven't fully updated their software to support it (though in theory Vista drivers should work - Microsoft say if a device is supported by Vista it's supported by Windows 7).

Thanks!

Oh, and VirtualBox works flawlessly with Win7, which is why I recommend it.
Plus it's free, which is really why I recommend it.

I have to admit, I'm really liking it. I spend more time in Windows 7 now than I do in OS X Leopard.

As far as I know, from my limited experience with VMware, it needs it's own drivers since it's a virtual environment and doesn't/can't use your normal device drivers.

At least that's what I was told while using it to test slipstreaming. I was never able to get drivers to integrate into the slipstream on an actual hardware installation (got a BSOD every time), but it seemed to work in VMware. Then I was told VMware ignores device drivers that are not built to run in the virtual machine.

Gonna put W7RC on the laptop I've had beta on for a while. The laptop is a little overmatched, but it runs OK.

Anybody know if there are "permissions" issues with the RC?

I haven't run into any yet. I've ran the full gamut without so much as a hiccup. I do get the occasional "Do you want to allow?" dialog, but you can change the level of annoyance in the control panel (or turn it off entirely). I set mine to "Alert, but don't dim the screen". It's much easier to handle.

I can honestly say I really like Windows 7.

^^^ I've been starting to have some crashes with it. They are not frequent, but when it does crash, EVERYTHING crashes, and I have to shut down (power off the PC) and restart the PC (Reset button won't do it, I keep getting the "Insert Boot Media" screen).

If this keeps on happening I'm going to have to downgrade to Vista or even XP.

^Is that happening randomly, or is it always while some specific application is running? or combination of applications?

Have you checked the event logs? Sometimes they are gobbledy-gook but they can sometimes point to what's causing the crash.

At what point are you getting the insert boot media message? It's quite possible there's something a miss with your hard disk.

Have you determined why it is crashing? Is there a pattern? Does it tend to crash with the same application?

I have gotten a few crashes with adobe acrobat reader of all things, but not the type you are describing. Mine have been a crash with a quick recovery back to the desktop. Aside from that, I have had no other crashes. And I think there is an answer to my issue but I have not had time to get too deep into it yet.

Anyway, I am interested as to what may be causing your issue. Let me know if you have any more details.

I've posted this on other forums and so far a couple of people have reported the same issues, but so far no one has come up with a solution.

Am currently downloading VirtualBox... :)

Thanks!

OK, am getting the same error now with VirtualBox too.

I didn't see any drivers installed before Windows 7 booted, but then I'm not familiar with VirtualBox so I assumed it did it automatically.

Am starting to think it might be the installer file I downloaded, and might have to acquire another.

All 2.6GB of it...
