Haven't seen TMP

Jimmy Bob

Commander

Should I go for the theatrical version or the director's cut? Which one delivers the finer experience?

Theatrical, definitely!

Sound fx on the DE are absolutely terrible, and the new fx are a mixed batch. I'd say watch the theatrical, or if you have an LD, watch the extended TV version, which is a decent second choice.

Watch the Director's Edition. It's the way it was meant to be seen and the pace is better.

Personally, I wouldn't bother at all. I wish watching TMP was a cherry I'd never popped.

Partly the DE is longer because they extended the Ilia theme overeture and the end credits are also longer.

I grew up with the "Special Longer Version" on VHS.

As a kid.

No, really.

I remember sitting entranced through the entire "v'ger cloud" sequence before I was old enough to walk. And now that same (basically ancient) VHS tape has the exact same effect on my one year old son.

There could be something to this. Maybe certain people are genetically predisposed to liking TMP?:vulcan:

Do yourself a favor and skip TMP. The DE is the better version but its the equivalent of spraying air freshener after taking a dump. It may smell better but its still a piece of crap.

I'd go with the DE, but I do have some nitpicks with the version, such as the removal of the vocal alarms which were replaced with something much more bland, and the nacelle outside the officers lounge which is more of a distraction if anything else.
Best part of the DE for me was the exterior of the V'Ger spacecraft as it approached Earth. I was always curious as to what it looked liked which was difficult for me to envision in the theatrical version.

The director's edition, only for the improvement of the Vulcan landscape. I like the big, semi-translucent obsidian ancient Vulcan warrior statues, what can I say...

Oh, and the obliteration of the canon-busting Vulcan moon is a relief, too.

I'd call it an indoctrination rather than a genetic predisposition.
