Have you noticed how "Yesteryear" influnced Star Trek XI?

I just re-watched D.C Fontana' s "Yesteryear", one of the best episodes of the animated series. Then I went to see Abram's STAR TREK film again (I liked it more the second time) and I was amazed at how some scenes and dialogue from "Yesteryear" were incorporated into the movie. In both the episode and the film, young Spock is taunted by his peers and reacts with violence. In another scene, older Spock says to his younger self:

"What you do not yet understand, Spock, is that Vulcans do not lack emotion. It is only that ours is controlled. Logic offers a serenity humans seldom experience in full. We have emotions, but we deal with them… and do not let them control us."

I don't have a script for Star Trek XI, but this is very close to what Sarek says to young Spock.

What do other folks think?

There has been discussion about Yesteryear, and at least one screen cap posted -- one of the three students with those blue bands across their chests, as they are costumed in the movie.

These threads are moving very fast, and I don't know where to find that screen cap. Maybe the person who posted them will post again. But I enjoy this topic. Yesteryear was the best thing about TAS. When I finally got to see that episode, it became clear where they had gotten the look of Vulcan for Star Trek III.

I confess I got quite the thrill during the young Spock scenes in XI: espeically those lines from "cousin" Selek to young Spock in TAS now spoken by Sarek to the child Spock in the movie. The screenwriters did their homework.

This TAS episode has also had plenty of references in the novels. I think it's the best of the TAS, and a touchsrtone for us Spock fanatics.

yep, Sarek says something very similar to the young Spock in the novelization.

hmm... Jeri, in your 8 viewings :p did you notice D.C. Fontana's name being credited anywhere at the end?

Yes, and it sort of drives me crazy when people go on about the movie Sarek being a kinder and gentler one because of that scene, when it is virtually the same discussion that was in Yesteryear!

It's nine, including the one time I did not see it in IMAX; but who's counting. I didn't really read the credits, I confess.

a lot of yesteryear has shown up in the other series including enterprise.

the bullies were first mentioned in babel also written by fontana.

Now they just need to include t'hy'la and some K/S and their "homework" will be complete.

Forgive my emoticon short story.

a lot of people here haven't watched TOS, much less TAS ;)
True. I didn't even know TAS existed 2 weeks ago, much less that it was considered as TOS fourth season
Should receive the DVDs this week and I'll watch them after I'm finished with rewatching TOS. That's not going to happen fast since I've watched "Amok Time" only yesterday (that episode is awesome).

I just rewatched Yesteryear yesterday (lol). I am in awe of how much it was used for the movie!

I think ENT really explored what Sarek says in Yesteryear and took a step beyond the "I am a Vulcan, I do not "feel" anything doctor.." of TOS's Spock. To see the movie continue in this direction is very interesting.

And the blue sashes.. I mean really.. such beautiful attention to detail, details unknown to even many Trek fans is a testimony to the writers respect of this franchise and its fans.

The remastered "Amok Time" features a shot of the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, looking exactly how it did in "Yesteryear", btw.
I knew that the shot of the city wasn't there when I watched that episode on TV! Granted, it was like 25 years ago but it struck me as "not being there before". It looks beautiful and not too much like CGI. More like traditionnal matte painting that could have been made in the 60's.

Yep. They really did their homework and IMO, that proves that they didn't reboot ST only to make more money. I mean, why loose time in tiny details and references since the movie was supposed to attract new fans to ST, ie people who weren't going to notice those details? For the fan audience? It was sure that we were going to see that movie, anyway. When I watch STXI, I feel a genuine love for ST universe and I think it's a big part of the reason why, even if the movie is flawed, I like it so much.

agreed. Why I also can't buy the accusations of it being slapdash for the money...

Or that they're hacks who blatantly swipe bits from other peoples' work. And TAS, come on. As pointed out above...

I didn't even know TAS existed 2 weeks ago."

Think there's hate for VOY and ENT, most people simply ignored or didn't even know about TAS. Yeah, that shows respect.
