Have you ever vacationed alone?

Holidays on your own are best if you pick a really, really swanky hotel and totally live it up for a few days or so.

That does sound kind of awesome. My biggest problem is that I am really bad at introducing myself to new people. I suck at small talk, so I never know how to talk to strangers without sounding completely boring and awkward.

For my part, I can't imagine anything less interesting than lounging around in a hotel. When I'm on vacation I'm never there except to sleep.

Striking up conversations with strangers isn't one of my strong points either. Kind of similar to why I prefer editing to writing...I'm much better at contributing to something that's already in-process than I am at getting the ball rolling.

I'm the same way. I'm a great listener, and I respond well to conversation, but I am terrible at initiating it.

Although I might be able to make it work if I have a few drinks in me first.

Dude, I wish. It would be nice to tour museums, go to unfamiliar restaurants, and take long walks without being at the mercy of someone else's stamina/tiny feet/tiny bladder/boredom meter.

See this is exactly why I went on vacation to Washington D.C. all by myself about a year and a half back.

I could go to museum after museum and walk from monument to monument without having to worry about someone else getting tired, bored, hungry, grumpy etc. I could spend as little or as much time at each location and really soak everything in.

There are some vacations you want to take someone else along with you (beach, Vegas etc) but there are other that in my opinion are much better by yourself.

I guess I'm just not extraverted enough to go to a strange new city alone and try to meet people there.

You're more extroverted than you think you are. Believe me, go on a holiday by yourself and you will find out just how extro you are. I know, I've done it.

Getting out of your comfort zone is really really good for you. Just close your eyes and jump in (metaphorically of course)

Have to say that while that advice reflects an ideal outcome, in my experience the results have been rather mixed and often disastrous.

Learn what you can from your experiences and move on. The past can't be undone. Only this moment matters, right now.

Damn it I have talked myself into wanting a holiday now.

No, but i would LOVE to.

Me too! We should go traveling alone together sometime!

Right now i am SO ready! :bolian:

Yes, nearly every year I take a long weekend for myself around my birthday and go to this lovely little town at the tip of Cape Cod called Provincetown. During the tourist season, it's party central, but in the off season it's very quiet and peaceful and relaxing and inspiring in a way that's difficult to explain. My birthday is in March, so when I go down it's very, very quiet. My husband is wonderfully understanding, and doesn't have a problem with me going alone to recharge my batteries a bit. It's usually just me, a good book or two, and maybe a good movie or two (that the hubby has no interest in.) I highly recommend it. :techman:

That is all kinds of awesome!

No, I haven't. But, that would be nice...maybe alittle lonely. Sometimes you need that though, being away from people you know. You can express whatever and not be judge. I hope that makes sense.

I haven't, but I'm really thinking about it this year.

With all of the crap I've been going through this year, everyone has been underfoot. And while it's nice to know that people are concerned, it'll be even nicer to get away from everyone for a few days- to do whatever the hell I want to do and go wherever the hell I want to go. It would be wonderful to take off for a few days with no agenda (other than when I need to be back) and see where I end up.
