Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterotype?

Ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional stereotype...?

I'm seriously considering a career in accounting, so I walk into the bookstore to look at the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) test-prep books. One of the test prep cds (in the back of the book) had been stolen. That's quite a way for that person to begin studying for an accounting exam!

Edit: Whoops. Sorry about the typo for stereotype...

I break the stereotype for computer programmers. I don't write code at home, I don't have a mondo-bitching super computer for my home system, and I'm not a gamer. I like old VWs for my hobby and work on cars a lot. I also enjoy serious DIY projects around the house (ie tile work, complete gutting and remodeling rooms, etc).

Re: Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterot

My Dad worked 20+ years at JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab), then at TRW.

He was literally a rocket-scientist.

Stereotype?

Smart? Yup.
Forgetful? We joked that he'd forget his head if it wasn't bolted on.
Engineer to the core? Even when his arteries got blocked, his body built back-up bypasses around the problem.

From about 5yrs ago: "Dad, how many people in the US know what you know?" "You mean people still alive?" "Yeah, Dad, that would help."

I've run into the same problem from time to time. The thing that always gets me is that I must be able to fix ANY computer problem, whether hardware or software, and if I can't I must be giving them a hard time or I just don't care.

I am a stereotypical professor in many ways--particularly in my absent-mindedness.

I'm sorry--what were we talking about?

You and my dad would get along famously. Though he does write code at home when he gets behind at work, but never any more than he has to.

Re: Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterot

I had sex with my one of my students - that counts right?

Wow. Please tell me you don't teach elementary school.
I knew a friend, a fellow professional like me, who had sex with one of his patients. He was caught one day, and got himself fired and struck off the Register.

He's no longer allowed to practise veterinary medicine again.

On the other hand I know a bunch of rocket scientists who are completely the opposite. One of them take it to the extreme. Yes the guy is very smart which is not really a stereotype but a requirement. Anyhow he has hooked up with birds from most of the Europe, half of Latin America and all of North America. I think Asia is next on his list. :) He is going to singapore in a few months.

:guffaw: Please tell me that story is true.

Re: Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterot

My uncle is a rocket scientist *worked for Los Alamos Natn'l labs for years* and he's also a Vietnam vet with PTSD (and he wasn't quite right before THAT) so visiting him is allways fun, he proves and disproves all the stereotypes depending on the hour of the day

A (relatively) famous medical consultant told me that one. I hope it was made-up.

On the other hand, another consultant told me there was a ghost in my hospital, so I don't know what to believe.

My dad was a design engineer for over 40 years. In the pre-Internet days, someone had a piece of paper with a test used to determine if a loved one were an engineer. The question that described him to a "T" was the following:

If the person in question enters a room with a crooked picture the following action will take place:

  1. Ignore it
  2. Straighten it
  3. Design a self leveling picture mechanism all the while declaring that the guy who invented the nail was a complete moron
Yep, my dad is option #3.

I asked my Torts professor about the "reasonable person" standard--whether or not my Dad fit it: Family vacation in 1973 where we'd be driving across New Mexicoa and Arizona. As our car did not originally have air conditioning, Dad had it added--then had the car's cooling system upgraded to handle the extra load.

"Reasonable" said my prof.

Then he had a back up cooling system installed to take over if the first system failed.

"Reasonable, but pushing it a bit" said my prof.

Then he had a warning light installed that the backup system would be coming on in 10 minutes, so get help now if possible.

"Beyond reasonable. What does he do?"

"Rocket scientist."

"They're not reasonable. Attorneys hate having them on juries."

in the case of my uncle, it would be option
#4. KABOOM!

Re: Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterot

I took a finance class with a somewhat wispy looking CPA last year. I was pretty surprised to find out he's a marathon runner and enjoyed scuba diving.

Re: Have you ever had somebody prove or disprove a professional sterot

My step-father is a nuclear engineer. He believes in redundant systems times three, but at the same time keeping things simple to avoid failures in the first place.

Me on the other hand... witness my latest project: I'm designing a lockbox for a thermostat that injures the user. Why use an off-the-shelf solution when you have an entire fabrication and machine shop at your disposal?

I get accused of "reinventing the wheel" all the time but hey, at least I'm capable of creative innovative thinking. :p
