Have U Bought This Cat Toy & Does Your Cat Like It?

This past year I frequently saw a commercial on TV for a cat toy called Cat’s Meow. It’s basically a motor under a circular yellow cloth. Attached to the motor is a wand that goes back and forth under the yellow cloth “like a mouse.” The commercial brags about how your cats will love playing with this new toy. Has anyone out there bought one of these for your cat and does your cat actually play with it? I’ve seen it at Bed Bath & Beyond and have been wondering if I should buy it for my cat. My cat is starting to gain a lot of weight and I’m afraid that if he doesn’t start exercising to lose some weight that he will get diabetes.

My cat played with it for about 5 minutes the first time. I pulled it out 3 or 4 times but she was only interested a minute or two.

Any time I have purchased a toy for my cats, they play with it the first day and then never use it again. But if I get a new box from Amazon or accidentally drop a rolled up ball of paper, it's endless fun. So I don't waste money on expensive toys any more. It's either something really cheap or I just give them something from around the house to play with. Their current favorite is "string tied around broomstick." They'll chase that around for hours.

Besides, I saw that commercial, and I can almost guarantee that thing stops working in about five minutes. They give you two of them for the price of one(!), so they must be cheap as hell to produce. Don't waste your money.

^ Speaking of the 2-for-1 deal, I got mine because my mother bought one for her cats. I have to say, my kitten (she's almost a year old now) absolutely loves it. She's already figured out how to pounce on it in such a way as to stop it from moving altogether. And my other cat (about 8 years old) is thoroughly intrigued by it (and watching the kitten go crazy for it). It's lasted about a week now without breaking down, but it definitely needs new batteries.

I've also heard from friends who say their cats run away from the damn thing.

Suffice to say: Yes, your cat could like it. And like it a lot. But considering the cost of the toy, the drain of batteries, and the chance that your cat might not want to have anything to do with it ... it's better to invest in a good, old-fashioned cardboard box or ball of paper as LoB suggests. Or a laser-pointer.

Is there any way to change the batteries? That is, is there a way to open it up and change the batteries?

It's so-so. Our cats kind of like it and still play with it on occasion. We have bought toys before that the cats completely ignored, so this may be considered a 'success story' I suppose. Actually, it seems that they prefer laying on it when it's turned off to actually playing with it when it's turned on!

As Locutus said, the preferred means of entertainment for our cats is an empty box.

It has held up OK - had it since Christmas. Batteries are easily replaceable.

The only thing my cat hasn't tired of is three 'Da Bird'. She goes and stares at the cupboard I keep it in, waiting...

One of our cats cries -- like, howls -- if we get a package and we fold up the box and put it in the recycling bin instead of tossing it to the floor so he can jump in it.

My sister has one. One of her cats loves it and will play with it endlessly, and her other cat is afraid of it and runs into the other room when its on. You know your cat best, so you would be the best judge as to whether or not the cat would find it appealing.

The only toy my cats love is the "Da Bird". There's even a "feather refill" pack for when your cat has destroyed the first one. They're really awesome because the feathers spin like crazy when you wave it around and every cat I know goes nuts.

But your cat's mileage may vary. :p

My cat would probably be scared of it, she doesn't like battery powered things generally. Currently she has a small ball of yarn and the kind of pull-chain that goes on a lamp. She has also enjoyed the laser pointer in the past, so I need to get some fresh batteries for that.

What's the difference between "Da Bird" and any other cat toy on a wand? Does it make noises? How much is it and where can I buy it? And how much do the refill feathers cost?

To be honest, one of the things that I liked about the idea of the cat toy thatI posted above is that it wouldn't require for me to join in on the play time. There are two 13-year old cats and a puppy in my house. Even though I don't own any of them, I end up having to take care of them the most (feeding and playing). It can be a bit overwhelming at times!

The Da Bird makes noises when the feathers spin. Apparently my cats think it sounds like a bird flying by. I really dunno why but for some reason it works really well.
I think it's like $8.

Thanks!! Where did you buy it?

Has anyone ever got a giant running wheel for their cat and did he/she use it??

Ro Laren, wiggling your fingers under a blanket has the same effect, and they're free. ;)

My cats haven't been interested in toys since they were young. Now, one loves boxes, and the other likes anything that's small enough to swat off a tabletop. He watches it land on the floor and immediately loses interest.

The only toy I've seen cats stay interested in for any reasonable length of time is a Bergan Turbo Track (looks like a slot car track, but you place a ball on it for the cat to bat).

Cats seem to enjoy mostly things that they work themselves, like moving an object around. If something is moving by itself, there is initial interest but then it dies off. Conversely, if you have an object attached to a string and you're pulling it, they KNOW you are doing it and love it. I get a kick out of a cat knowing you're nearby doing the controlling, but still focusing on the "object of interest"... even when you're close by. Cats are so intelligent.

One of my cat's favorite toys is a short piece of old bootlace with a knot tied at both ends.
