I'm posting this in the "fan art" forum because (1: my question involves aesthetic and design concerns, and (2: this topic doesn't fit anywhere else.
My question is about "prime Universe" TOS/pre-TOS, TMP-era movies, TNG and DS9. I am mostly focusing on TOS and pre-TOS.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but throughout STAR TREK, we've never seen any of the Starfleet characters wear hats that match their uniforms. The Romulans in TOS and the Enterprise security guards in the movies were seen wearing tightly form-fitting helmets, but that was about it.
Take the standard duty uniform Starfleet personnel wear aboard ship. We saw a brimmed cap in Captain Pike's quarters in "The Cage", but we never saw a character wear a uniform hat of any kind.
My questions would be twofold: (1: are we to assume from this that "the absence of evidence implies the evidence of absence", in essence, that "Starfleet personnel never wear hats", and (2: if we do assume that uniformed on-duty personnel may wear hats in some circumstances (that we never saw in cannon), than what would those hats look like?
I'm assuming that the first question's answer is obvious, that hats are not somehow forbidden or otherwise unthinkable in STAR TREK. That seems a little silly given that Pike had one in his quarters. As for the second question, I'm especially curious as to what kind of coordinated uniform hat would match the standard colored shirt and black trousers Starfleet fatigues we saw the characters wear in TOS. I'm trying to envision Captain Kirk or Ensign Chekov wearing a garrison cap, or maybe some kind of beret... Maybe there's some other possibility...
My primary concerns would be if such a hat would fit in with the minimalist design philosophy that seemed to permeate TOS, and still have at least some influence post-TOS.
