Hat's off for David Mack

I agree, damn good books. I started them right before I went on vacation in April and blew through them while on vacation. Just couldn't put them down.

Seriously though, if you are a fan of David Mack, you simply must read The Calling. It's a gripping tale with mystical elements and an interesting mythology that the (hopefully) first book barely scratches the surface of.
Seconded to infinity.

The Calling is now one of my favorite all-time books, and that list is fairly exclusive.

No joke. The fight scene in the subway station is one of the best pieces of action writing I've ever seen. I was physically breathing hard by the end.

So, I haven't really read a lot of Trek novels in the last 10 years and am kind of getting back into it - started with some Mangels and Martin crap - I'm assuming this guy is considerably better than them?

Even as some who enjoyed Martin and Mangels Titan and Enterprise books, I'll admit that David Mack is leagues ahead of them. That's the one nice thing about Trek Lit these days, it's got a huge variety of authors with very unique styles, so if you don't like one there are still plenty of others you might.

Oh, and just FYI most of the Trek Lit authors including Andy Mangels, and David Mack do post here.

Oh, that's actually really cool - nice to see them being active in the community. I actually didn't hate the Mangels/Martin stuff I read (okay, I did hate Kobayashi Maru), I just find it a bit heavy handed and unsubtle. I'm also pretty sure Ranul Keru is a Mary Sue character.

I think I may have to give that Vanguard series a try after I get myself current with the Titan series.

You should, Vanguard is amazing. It's pretty much what Trek would be if it were on Showtime. (Hell, the newest book is the second Trek book to feature characters saying f--k, and first time in dialogue, twice.)

Okay, you just said the magic words that are going to get me to put off reading any more Titan books and go right to Vanguard (and no, it wasn't f*ck - it was that it was like a Showtime Trek series). That sold me.

Martin and Mangles are just different. Mack seizes your heartstrings in Destiny and refuses to let go. It does get a bit wearing by the end. Sometimes I wished Mack had let stopped plucking so much and give up some less emotional discussion so we could see what logic leaps a character was going to make. Some of the decisions in Destiny seemed a bit opaque at the time, to the point of being inexplicable.

Martin and Mangles to better with more optimistic fare. Not so much of a bloodbath, but not the banter that KRAD does.

Halfway between the two, I'd say.

On that note: I wish Andy would come back. Somehow--and don't take this wrong, Mike, but--I think Andy's characterization-skills make their books shine, more than anything else....

But now to business:

Yes--Mr. Mack is supremely awesome as a writer. His books are true page-turners, in the proper sense of the word. He's like Peter David sans the bizzare comedy, if ya know what I mean.

Folks like him, KRAD, Chris, and Dayton are a major part of what have kept Trek alive in our hearts and minds.

I sincerely hope Mr. Mack never goes away. Someone get started on that genetic enhancement stuff--so he can be immortal!

Here's to ye, mate! :techman:

I think he did pop in here briefly a couple months ago, but I haven't seen any posts by since then.

Yeah... I've been wondering about Andy for some time now.
I sure hope he's doing okay.

I knew he'd had some setbacks of late, but no mention of him has been made in a long while.

Oh right... and to keep the thread on topic: "Mack does good work."

The Destiny Trilogy has been my best read, if not one of my best, of all time. If only it could have been Star Trek XI (lets out a sigh)!

I can't wait until Zero Sum Game comes out in November. But I still have to wait five more months! AAAAAARRRGH! The wait is driving me insane!
