Has your city ever been used by Hollywood?

Until recently, my city has only ever been used in filming a Canadian movie called Men with Brooms starring Leslie Neilsen and Paul Gross.

Just a few weeks ago, it was announced that Hollywood was coming to film a big blockbuster called The Truth starring Eva Longoria, Forest Whittaker and Andy Garcia. They showed a clip on the news last week showing their trailers all lined up on a secluded street. They also announced that shooting would take place downtown, and told people not to panic if they heard gunshots or windows breaking. They've also been doing some shooting with snipers on a roof, and done some shooting in the Mayor's office.

Something like this is quite new to us, and it's also quite the culture shock to the actors due to the weather as it's very cold right now, who are normally used to warmer weather, but they also appreciate the fact that it's all new to us as it gives them a certain energy seeing that most places they shoot in like NY or LA are all used to this being part of their economy. Seeing us excited about this makes it fun for them and they've been gracious of our Canadian hospitality.

Ironically, apparently we're supposed to double for a South American town, as they're also doing some shooting in the Dominican Republic.

So yeah, quite exciting.

Very rarely.

I do remember that lots of About Schmidt was shot here. Warren Schmidt's house is just a few miles away from where I live. As was the "I thought you might want THESE back!" scene. And the grocery store Schmidt shops at is supposed to be mine, although the crews used another store (across town) as a stand-in for filming purposes.

I grew up in Pasadena. Lots of movies and tv shows, and the Rose Parade on New Years Day. Now in Fresno, CA; which even had a short-lived tv show named for it.

A number of movies have shot on location in Boston. In addition, the TV series Spenser: For Hire shot here for a couple of years back in the 80s.

Yes, all the time.

I love how so many movie nitpickers criticize the presence of skyscrapers in shots of the DC area, not realizing it's Arlington right across the river

Richmond VA is involved in some kind of movie now...I forgot what it was...I believe it has been used before.

Breaking Bad FTW!

I also grew up a few miles from where Fargo was filmed. In fact, I was busboy at the sports pub where Margie interviewed the two hookers.

In recent years, New Orleans has come to be known in some circles as "Hollywood South." The state offers attractive tax incentives and several major motion pictures have been filmed here in the last few years. The Green Lantern, Wolverine, Expendables, Final Destination 4 and Bad Lieutenant are a few of the recent movies filmed in New Orleans.

Eight is Enough took place in Sacramento, but as far as I know, it was not filmed here.

In 1994 however, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman filmed a two hour episode where they went to Washington DC, and our Capitol building stood in for the DC capitol and the White House. I watched the episode, wondering if they would re-color the Capitol dome in post production (the one in Washington is white and much larger, ours is gold or copper, not sure which), but they didn't. I also remember our CBS station's local news making much of it.

Constantly. I grew up in Seattle and have lived in NYC for 11 years. It's fun to nitpick for inconsistencies.

There's a username I haven't seen in a while; nice to see you around again!

On topic, my city's also frequently used as a TV and film set, largely because of its rich architectural legacy/pretty grounds, and secondly because of the fact it's famous enough to be featured in plenty of fictional works anyway. Examples of the first category would be the Harry Potter films; examples of the latter would be stuff like The Golden Compass, Brideshead Revisted, The Oxford Murders, etc, etc. I was walking through town just the other day and something or other was being filmed near one of the city's landmark buildings.

The original Italian Job was set in Turin, Italy.

Bits (the prison scenes) were also filmed here, coincidentally enough.

My current city was so thrilled to have a major production filming here. Claims of "new hollywood" and such. Then the movie was released. The second Punisher starring Thomas Jane and Travolta. Don't think there has been a movie shot here since.

I hear they're going to give the Punisher yet another movie chance. Your city should pitch; given the number of shots the character's had, it could be quite a lucrative niche... :D
