Has there ever been a real war between the Federation and Klingons?

Just asking, Would "Yesterday's Enterprise" count? Until the Enterprise C was sent back, the Federation and Empire were at war for 20 years.
Since it was erased from the timeline I wouldn't count it.

Yeah, if that counts then there have probably been either tens of thousands or an infinite number of wars between the Federation and Klingons in other alternate timelines (depending on how you take alternate timelines).

Hello everyone,
First, I have to admit that I’d not thought of interpreting “The Emissary” that way. Now Christopher’s pointed it out, I feel a bit of a fool. Not only does it fit with what’s said, but it has made sense of the way the Organian “peace” arrangement never seems to stop the Klingons from attacking the Federation at every opportunity, in fact, every time we see them between “Errand of Mercy” and “Star Trek VI”.

Secondly, it took me a while, but in answer to the original question: yes GalaxyCass1701 there is an all-out war between the Federation and the Klingons. It’s in “Spock Must Die!” by James Blish (first published in 1970, so it’s not really very current). The war itself lasts for about six months, and ends with the Klingons being denied warp drive for 1,000 years. So it really doesn’t fit in at all with anything that happens after the original series, even the other Bantam novels. I think it must be one of the “infinite possibilities” as suggested by Idran, not part of the main timeline.

Best wishes,
Timon

For some reason I was thinking there was a full fledged war between the Federation and the Klingons sometime between the beginning of the Federation and TOS, but after based on the other posts in the thread it sounds like I must have been mistaken. I honestly don't remember where I got the idea from.

Indeed, a 20-year war that, according to Capt. Picard in *that* timeline, the Federation was losing. It was estimated that if something didn't change fast, the Klingon Empire would land troops on Earth itself within 6 months or so.

'Tis a good thing that particular reality never came to pass. I mean, can you see the Klingons surviving a Borg onslaught?

In STO, this timeline doesn't die right away.

Instead...
Due to the Klingon weapons fire, the anomaly is redirected. The 1701-C travels into the year 2409. The Klingons conquered the Federation and faced La Résistance. When the Dominion came, the conquered everyone but a few. The Tholian Assembly enslaved Romulan space.Qo'noS is a blast zone. The Résistance was crushed by the Jem'Hadar.

In the words of Va'Kel Shon, who is nominally the captain of the 1701-F:

"I never knew the Federation, or Starfleet. The war was almost over before I was born. This is the only life I know. One of servitude. Deprivation. Loss."
He knows of the Federation from his parents and grand parents, and wants the UFP back.

The player helps Yar and Castillo break free the Enterprise-C from the Tholian captors (cf. Defiant, 2155), and battle the Tholian reinforcements. The USS Pastak arrives, and helps return the 1701-C. Captain Walker says, "This timeline is an abomination that we're here to correct."

When you play a Star Trek captain, weird is part of the job.

Fun fact: my avatar pic is from the aforementioned mission.

Yeah, it was the second half of the 4-part story that debuted DC's Trek comic, so it was shortly after TWOK and before TSFS. Which was undated at the time, but 2285 according to the assumptions made later by the Okudachron.

Just read this yesterday in The Best of Klingons that I got from Humble Bundle.

Koloth dies! I guess Deep Space Nine is in an altered timeline...
