Has Season 2 made use of any of the background characters?

I'd like to see them fleshed out at least a little more than they have. I'm getting bored with The Adventures of Burnham, with nobody else really being of consequence.
I don’t think we’re going to see any of the bridge characters’ stories elevated to the point where they push Burnham into the background. A much more logical and possibly plausible wish would be that the show focuses more on the main character’s, Saru, Tilly, Stammets, etc, than Burnham.

The bridge crew remind me a lot of the background nurses from ER. A lot of them appeared in every episode and over the course of 15 years we gradually learned more and more about them. I for one am happy with a slow burn approach. Patience is a virtue.

I'm just glad we're not having instances similar to voyager's 'Chakotay take the conn' because the showrunners don't want to pay a background extra and have to give a full cast member something to do.

Voyager is a hilarious example, because they actually did use a good amount of extras (initially) and give them screen time before completely forgetting about them in the best ways. Voyager was about extremes, I guess.

- Carey was prominent in the first season, then only appeared in flashbacks until the final season when they remembered that he was actually alive, and then they promptly killed him.
- Samantha WIldman mysteriously disappears after being a frequently visited recurring character, only to have her daughter upstage her for the rest of the trip.

Carey is a fun example, because I was thinking that it'd be nice if Detmer or one of our other side-characters was ported over to a DSC spinoff show and became a main; the actor who played Carey was a random bridge officer in TNG before being upgraded to named recurring character in VOY. I obviously want to believe he's the same person.

I think the worst was when Garak would take a Defiant bridge station.

No, wait. It was Hoshi operating a newfangled transporter. Need a specialist to operate this very new and potentially dangerous device? Nope. Just get anyone already contracted to speak.

Actually in addition to central 4: Burhnam, Tilly, Stamets and Saru, there is also Pike, Georgiou, Tyler with Culbert and Reno so far this year, not to mention the Admiral. That actually rounds out the cast of more than just co-stars to about the sames as the Berman shows. Last year we had Sarek for a bunch of eps and Lorca and the Admiral. Yes, the bridge crew is not dominant, but there''s more than just 4 characters and a bunch of extras with an odd speaking part. There are a decent number of recurring parts on the show.

Detmer has actually been in every episode, which is more than Tilly or Stamets can say.

I think a character with her sass probably deserves to maybe get the opportunity to move the Section 31 Series with a larger role, like O'Brien when DS9 was started up..

What's weird is I think they actually made a point before the season started of trying to give these background characters more to do. For example I think Detmer and the other lady at helm are suppose to be a married couple. So far other than a funny glance during the season opener and snot alien shooting snot on Connolly and later sitting in on a briefing nothing has really happened to them. Plus I am also curious about the guy working the transporter and what's up with his cool futuristic shades.

What? Really? Wasn't Detmer making out with some dude during the retro 21st century throwback party? I mean if they're okay with that as a couple that's fine, but within the context of what we see on the series I think it's unlikely that they are married.

I might be wrong but I thought not only were they are couple but even had a kid. It is a kind of vague memory I am going off though so it should all be treated with a grain of salt.

The answer is yes, but barely. Most are still speaking props at this point.

They are background props to enhance the diversity of the show. Gene had a similar idea during TOS, but he actually gave Sulu decent screentime and development during S1. It was a secondary role, but it was still something.

Detmer, Owo, Airiam, Nhan, Asian guy, and Black guy are just glorified extras. Nothing more, and never will be. The females seem to have slightly more to do than the men. The two men are hopelessly unmemorable and expendable. Not surprising on this show.

Which doesn't mean much, really. Which TNG character had more depth, Ensign Jae or Ensign Ro? Jae was in over sixty eps, Ro only in eight.

ANd don't forget O'Brien was originally supposed to be that as well. Just a guy to run the transporter.
