Has Letterman lost his touch?

What do you guys think? when I was younger and in middle school, I actually used to stay up late and watch Dave. This was around the time when he made the move to CBS. Since I was far too young to stay up during the days he was on NBC after Johnny (also I never knew who he was), I would watch him at 11:30. I've since seen many clips and full episodes from his older Late Night show too.

I used to think Dave was utterly hysterical. I loved his bits - especially when Larry Melman would show up at the strangest times. Nowadays, Dave doesn't seem to be enjoying his show anymore. Granted, he has been in the late night game for a lot of years, so he may feel some burnout, but I can't even recall the last time I watched and had a really good laugh.

One of my all-time favorite moments was from his older show - dated back sometime in 1983 - where Dave had Larry Melman standing by at the Port Authority Bus Depot in New York to hand out hot towels to the people getting off of the buses. Dave couldn't even keep it together as he watched Larry talk to the people around by asking them a question and sticking the microphone in the person's face, seemingly cutting off the audio. So we only heard about half of the question he'd be asking people.

"Where are you --- ?!"
"Ohhh, do you have any questions about New --- ?"
"Did you have a snack on the --- ?"

Among other moments are when Dave interrupted the Today Show with a bullhorn and exclaimed that he wasn't wearing any pants. Also, when he visited the GE building (shortly after NBC was bought) with a basket of fruit, but is confronted by building security.

There was also a time when Dave visited Conan very VERY early on when Conan took over the show. Dave told one of the funniest stories I've heard.

Conan was telling Dave how hwe visited Dave's old office and wanted to know why the windows were covered with plexiglass. Dave went on to tell a story about how in the afternoons he and his crew would play football, baseball, soccer, any kind of sport in his office.

"So one day, during batting practice, I lost control of the bat and it shot right through one of the windows. Now we were on the fourteenth floor above the intersection of 51st and 6th avenue. So the bat wedges in and is sort of hanging on the ledge and I say to myself, 'Now this is a sign, maybe us kids better quit screwing around in the office.' So I didn't learn anything from that and a couple years later I was playing catch with my assistant and the ball gets away from me. And I had wound up pretty good and it goes into the venitian blinds of the window, shatters the glass, and drops fourteen floors to the sidewalk below. Now so you think to yourself, 'Well, folks are dead!' And it was the single worst moment of my life in this building so I got the courage up and I said, 'You know it's situations like this where a person has to be responsible for their own actions. You have to answer for your behavior. You have to know what is the right thing and you have to do it.' And it was then that I sent an intern down to see who dead."

I really wish I could've been old enough to stay up late and watch, not only Johnny at 11:30, but stay up even later to watch Dave! That's amazing. How lucky you guys were in those days.

I do stay up every night and catch Conan and I think for my generation, he's going to be the late night host to remember - especially when he steps in to take over the Tonight Show.

But in regards to the point of the post, do you think Dave's as good as he used to be?

I don't watch the show much these days, but I saw youtube of Dave interviewing that dorky "Spencer" dude from "The Hills" on his show recently. It was vintage Dave, harkening back to his "dark" days back on NBC. Dave ripped the guy a couple of new ones.

Two of his questions; "How did you get on that show? Hell, how did you get on THIS show?"

Letterman is still top notch. Yes, his act is different from 1230... heck, it's different from a few years ago... As with all things, his style has changed... But he still has his edge.

Anytime you think Letterman has lost his edge, watch Leno for about 10 minutes. Or Carson Daly. Or Ryan Seacrest. It's a very American Idol world now, and even Dave at the least of his powers is miles above that awful schlock.

I laugh hardest watching the Late Show when Dave gets cracked up and laughs for minutes at his own joke.

Bingo. I happen to think Dave is still hilarious, but even if you don't, compare him to the other idiots that are somehow given the job.

The only exception being Conan, but as big a fan I am of him, even I get tired of his shtick from time to time.

Dave is great but I much perfer Craig Ferguson. Since they are on one after the other that's not really a problem. :p

So, no, I don't think he's lost his touch. He can be a little slow on some days but he's miles better than Leno.

Ya. Carson makes me want to throw out my digital TV coupon. Dave is still one of the few great ones left.

I think the 12:30AM guys will probably always be the best, we used to always stay up to watch Dave in college. And Conan now seems to have that absurdist type of show. I don't know that he's lost it but I do think he had to tone it down for 11:30PM. I still like Dave a lot but it's not the same show it was at NBC but then again he doesn't have guests like "the bubble king" and "Dr. Buzzard" (and his book "Who do Voodoo? You do!") and so on either. And getting older too kind of puts a damper on jumping into a giant bowl of cereal and velcro walls and the like.

Yeah, I've watched Dave since the beginning and the style is different but he hasn't come down with "Bob Hope Syndrome" (funny when you're young; not so much when older) yet. I do like Conan but I'm hooked on Craig Ferguson now.

Mark me down as another one who loves Conan but when I have the choice, I will watch Ferguson 99 percent of the time. I don't really know why, I also would choose Kilborne over Conan as well and I really do love Conan.

Maybe Conan is just like, once you seen him, you've seen him. You know?

Letterman must be an American taste.I have watched his show on (very)late night cable.Bafflingly un-funny.

I'm sure there is a regional factor. Some of the old Flying Circus stuff falls flat to me. Why are they always in dresses? I don't understand the ethnic jabs at Scots. But I think there is a similarity between that work and Letterman. I think Dave's show has lifted a lot of Python esque stuff over the years. But who hasn't in comedy.
I haven't watched Dave in a while. Last show I saw had an interview with baseball player David Ortiz. Dave asked him if he had any words of advice for his fans out there or something to that effect. Ortiz said, and I quote, "Go home and get some ass." A wise man, that David Ortiz.

I used to love watching Letterman, but now everytime I try it just isn't very funny. It has its moments, but nothing like it used to. Still better than Leno though.

I was thinking about it and one thing about Conan now and Dave of old was that the enjoyment of the show was completely independent of the quality of guests. In fact, it was often better when the guests were bad or turned them down for greener pastures and they had to get a last minute guest or an old reliable standby to show up. There's a lot of shenanigans on Conan to enjoy without guests.

I'm not sure if Conan has any reliable standby guests (except Abe Vigoda perhaps) . Dave has Amy Sidaris and Regis now and I always love a visit by old cohorts Chris Elliott and Gerard Mulligan. And there's Rupert of course. Tony Randall used to show up a lot when he first moved to CBS.

Craig Fergusson does spin a great story sometimes and really engages the audience/viewer, for a guy who doesn't do a lot of skit stuff he's pretty entertaining.

I have noticed for the past couple of years that Dave seems to be half-assing it. The jokes are lazy and not really all that funny. You get the sense that he could have thought of something funnier to say but didn't feel like putting in the extra effort. I don't blame him though, as he's been doing it so long I'd start getting lazy as well. And he's still better than Leno.

Exactly! The other thing is, Dave used to be a real wiseass, which was one of the reasons I enjoyed watching him so much. It must be an age thing - maybe maturing or whatnot, but he's just not the same Dave that I can remember.

Johnny Carson. Now I have seen a lot of his shows older and newer, all reruns of course, and he never seemed to lose his touch. Even as he got older he still seemed to be the same old Johnny from the early days.

One of my favorite moments sometime in the last few years on his show, Dave marched out onto the street in the middle of his show and started to pick up the trash off the sidewalk. He even started forcing everyone walking by to participate!

Everyone was walking down the street, then suddenly see Dave come out telling everyone to pick the trash up and are just going, "WTF?"

Dave's wiseassery diminished greatly on the move to CBS. I don't know if it was age necessarily though, I think he didn't want to offend and put off high-profile guests. He was really hurt when NBC chose Leno over him and I think that affected him and made him try to rethink his approach as well as
personal pride to be very successful in his arena.

I'm not saying that he doesn't half-ass it sometimes now but that was a factored into some of the change. I wouldn't be overly surprised if he turned over the mantle soon but not until Leno has departed.
