Has anyone replaced an iPod battery?

Rather than, you know, Apple simply giving the person the ability to replace the battery.

To be fair every MP3 player and smart phone also have this issue.

It's just stupid that you can't just take the back off and take the battery out.

Um, what? My last two smartphones allowed me to take the back off and drop in a new battery without any special tools or soldering. It's the iPods, iPhones and Zunes of the world that don't let you do this...why Microsoft would emulate Apple on that front is beyond me.

Having it always hooked up to the charger is a sure-fire way to kill the battery.

How so?

It's an oddity with some batteries.

There are two design methodologies for rechargeable batteries:

- Deep Cycle. These are designed to be used up before being recharged. They will not handle constant charging very well. It will reduce their life expectancy. It isn't an issue of them having a 'memory effect'. Deep cycle batteries are usually suited for use in high power electronics.

- Trickle Charge. These are designed to be left on charge fairly constantly, so taking a supply voltage across them even when they are full. These do not like to be deep cycled. It will reduce their life expectancy, so are better suited as backup batteries for low power electronics that stays on most of the time.


It's not normally of interest to the consumer, but if you look to industrial suppliers they will often list these two types separately in their inventories.

Most phones I have seen with a touch screen are impossible to take the damn battery out. I like flip phones, I don't need to text that badly.

Pretty much every smartphone I've seen or read about that was released in the past two years has a removable battery.
