Has Anyone Changed Their Mind About The Movie?

I don’t see the problem. If the story explains how the characters came together as they are "later" seen (without obvious inconsistencies), its an origin story.

And that's pretty much what Star Trek or Batman Begins are. The characters are almost exactly the same as what the audience knows of them.

Otherwise it’s a reboot, new beginning, alternative history, displaced history, etc. etc. etc. What’s so hard about that?

Those are really just sub-classifications. The case could be made that a reboot can be an origin story depending on your definition of origin story (and reboot for that matter).

Since this does hinge on "in use" definitions, I thought I would take another look for meanings of "origin stories" and I found one concerning comic book heroes which seems to support your point of view and that of others here. Not so much about where the characters end up, as the term's apparent use in describing anything up to and including a full reboot (whatever reboot means, as you say).

Since the definition of origin story seems to be wider than I thought, it is quicker and safer just to apologise to all concerned.

And every other Jedi had to die in really contrived ways just because the franchise needed all of them dead by the end.

We were told that Jedi could be killed by Muggles in the other prequels, by overwhelming numbers if nothing else, and we saw it happen in AOTC.

Apologies aren't necessary at all. You were arguing in the context of your own definition, and in that case it made sense. Most everybody else was coming from a point of view that wasn't so anal about the details* and had a much broader definition. And plus, it doesn't really matter because arguing over semantics is kind of pointless anyways.

I was far more interested in comparing Batman Begins and Star Trek in their usage of introducing the old characters in a new way, and I think Jarod really nailed it on the head for me in his last post.

* I can get pretty anal on the details myself, but after Enterprise and the latest movies, somehow I just don't care as much about canon.

I watched it again last night, and I enjoyed it. Many of you will probably say that the next movie will be a disaster too, but you're still gonna watch it over and over again. I can hardly wait for it...

Canon violations? It's an alternate timeline, it doesn't matter a thing. And I will watch it again. And the next movie. AND The Final Frontier, Insurrection, and Nemesis. They're all part of the ST franchise.

If we forget some plot holes, STXI is a very nice sci-fi action movie to watch, it's the Star Trek for the HD generation; a beginning of the new Trek era.

Just wanted to say that i' liked the movie and no matter what some die hard fans say i thought it was good and funny. OK science bit was totally rubbish especially the end bit black hole thingy and supernova destroying Romulus nonsense, but as entrainment value movie was one of the best that came out in 2009.

I only hope next Star Trek movie is more successful and better story and plot lines, science bit too, I really don't want to have my IQ challenged buy stupid notions of black holes exploding or our sun going supernova 7 billion years early.

If we forget some plot holes,

Which we have had to do in all preceding movies and series over and over and over and over.
... .

Yeah, but unlike previous Trek they need to learn to pace themselves. Its no good using up ten movie's worth of plotholes in your first outing. Now if they want to get the next film finished on time they'll probably have to borrow plotholes from their other projects.

I still got a strange feeling that the next movie will be awesome, and that STXI was just a warm-up.

When the movie first came out I loved it and gushed over it.

Then I saw it a few more times.

Then it was sorta eh.

Then I was like "this movie's not that great".

I know, I'm a "hater".

I don't think my view of the film has changed that much.

When I first saw it, there were things I liked, but also a lot of things I didn't like. I assumed that many Trek fans enthusiasm would wear off when they started to notice more and more of the film's flaws.

What has changed I think is my frustration that this doesn't seem to be happening that much, though it has a little bit. So I may sound a little more anti JJ Trek than I really am, as a way to counter the enthusiasm for the movie. I understand why people like it, but it really wasn't that good, certainly not the best of the movies.

For you, but to them it may be.

To be fair, this can apply to every single movie made. I certainly was a huge fan of "First Contact" and still am, but I'm not as enthusiastic about it. But then, there really isn't need for me to be 14 years after the fact. There wasn't any need for me to be 2 years after the fact. And I'm sure all of us have gone through that with a few things in Star Trek or anything else in life, rather big or small.
