Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" footage?

Ian Keldon

Fleet Captain
Haven't heard anything in a while.

It was a dirty thing for the director/editor to do, taking footage he had no rights to.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I do not believe this private business matter is one "the production" wishes to discuss in a public forum.

"The production" never brought this issue to public knowledge, nor have they commented on it to my knoweldge. The only public statement made was to inform folks that the edit of "Kitumba" released was neither approved nor sanctioned by "the production".

Greg can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you'll see any public follow-up by "the production" to this question.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I'm well aware of the politics at work here, and why Phase II can't push as it should to retrieve it's stolen property.

I just wanted to know if any progress had been made in retrieving it.

Is that not allowed?

Sure it's allowed!

The short answer is that after working the issue, I have just recently received a 2 Terabyte hard drive that would appear to contain the remaining "Kitumba" footage and Final Cut Pro "timelines." So I think we have everything now and we can start working on our edit of "Kitumba"--if we think it's still worth it at this point, now that our thunder has been stolen a bit.

We are torn between wanting to let our fans know that the issue would seem to be resolved and not wanting to share something that is mostly just a private business concern. But we understand that our fans have a vested interest in the matter, so this serves to let everyone know that this wayward footage would appear to now have been recovered.

At the moment, we have our hands full with our next shoot--coming up in a couple of weeks. This episode, "Bread and Savagery," will be a challenge for a variety of technical reasons, so we are focused on that currently. But when we come up for air, we'll get back to the post-production of "Kitumba" and see where we stand--and what are next steps might be.

Lastly, if word isn't out yet, we are planning a "re-launch" of our series a bit later this year. There are a few interesting changes in store. So, in light of these planned changes to our series, we'd probably have to take another look at (and make some changes to) the "Kitumba" edit anyway. And, for that matter, we also will need to take a look at where we stand regarding "The Protracted Man" (f.k.a. "Origins") and "Mind-Sifter." The edits of those furture episodes might need to be reworked a bit in light of our "re-launch" changes.

Lastly (and it might land me in hot water with my boss), there needs to be some grudging thanks to the parties who provided the last of the "Kitumba" footage to us. When everyone gets entrenched in their positions and everything is at an impasse, it sometimes takes courage to relent and to compromise. So their willingness to compromise and to hand over the last of the footage with absolutley nothing in return has earned them my gratitude and respect. (I know: "That and a dime....")

There may yet be some more formal announcement from us about the successful resolution to this matter--something more formal that just a silly post from me on TrekBBS. (Like I said above, we're not sure how big a deal we should be making about this.)

Thanks everyone for your interest in "Kitumba"--and in our Star Trek Phase II production in general.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I think all the interest in this particular matter stems from the fact that many of us know how hard it is to get this sort of thing done. We just wanted to see you guys treated fairly; with the respect you-all and the production as a whole are due. My personal hope is that valuable lessons have been learned by all involved.

That said, I'm a big believer in Karma. What comes around, goes around...the universe has a way of working things out. :bolian:

Glad to hear the matter is resolved to a point of moving forward and beyond.

I don't think any thunder has been stollen...in fact, this has only piqued interest. We all want to see this finished...properly, in typical Phase II kick-ass fashion.

Closing the gate, moving on.....

I chose not to watch the unofficial edit; Your thunder hasn't been stolen, with me at least.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I am NOT a believer in Karma, but I am happy to hear this is working out, and happier to hear that Greg is grateful. If, indeed, Star Trek Continues is shot, you never know when they might need a favor, and this leaves that possibility more open.

Speaking as a lover (and indexer...) of Star Trek Fan Films, I will say, there are NEVER ENOUGH good ones! But I admit... the supply of good ones keeps growing. I haven't yet watched the new German release (with English subtitles) Star Trek - The Next Animation, but I'm hearing good things about it. (It's a Headline at Star Trek Reviewed as I type this).

By the way... there are never enough careful and thoughtful Star Trek Fan Film reviews, either!

Really, really looking forward to Kitumba. I certainly understand if you guys put is aside for a few months, but I hope you won't abandon it. Man, I was really interested in that!

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I have a friend who read the "Kitumba" script in the softcover "Phase II" book, and he says it's impossible for you folks to do justice to the story. I say let's wait until the film is produced and evaluate it then. Phase II has a sterling track record, and I too am anxious to see the final product.

(By the way, I've avoided reading the story in that softcover so I won't be spoiled before seeing the film.)

And I'm glad the whole situation is getting straightened out.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

The unauthorized release has damaged the episode and the enthusiasm of it, with in the core team. It should never have occurred.

Maybe so, but I'm still very much looking forward to seeing the real version.

Impossible, because the script isn't in that book: merely a treatment.

DITTO!

:techman:

Well, actually, I missed the unofficial edit, then found out about it when the whole kerfluffle hit, and THEN chose not to watch it. But same effect; I'll see it when you fine folks at Phase II are done with it.

It is available online, though. I have a copy of it here buried somewhere deep in my Psidonian vaults. Perhaps Captain Hall simply got his source confused?

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

GSchnitzer, thank you for the update.

Add me to the list of those who have not, and do not want to see the "bootleg" edit.

If you are at all soliciting votes, count my vote for finishing (and adapting if need be) "Kitumba" for eventual release.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

Again, I do understand that the core Phase II team is upset. But let me emphasize that the release was seen by very few people, while literally MILLIONS typically do watch the final Phase II releases.

I realize that there are decent fan films that are never viewed by as many as 1000 people. (In fact, I suspect I know it better than just about anyone.) However, Phase II is in a league of it's own. If Mickey Mantle had played for a bad farm team that people didn't like for a few years before becoming a Yankee, he'd still be Mickey Mantle. No one would give a rat's posterior.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

Oh the episode will get released, no worries there. There is just simply a lot of hard work yet to be done to get this out the door properly, and I won't put out anything if it is not done right.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

I'm glad you got the video back. I would not watch the bootleg copy, I will wait for the Phase 2 treatment. I wounder what this "reboot" of Phase 2 will be. ????? I hope John Kelly will return also.

Re: Has any progress been made getting back the stolen "Kitumba" foota

Question answered; thread closed; potential problems avoided. I hope. :)
