Harry Potter films to vanish from stores 12/29

Now's the time to pick up your sets, people.

Personally, I'm not crazy about it but lord knows there are probably people out there just as stupid as me who will go buy up the discs before they get locked away in the vaults.

Do you have all the movies so far? Will you get the rest before they disappear?

Link.

The difference of course between now, and back when Disney used to do this is if someone really wants them they can go download them.

Interesting. I really was just thinking the other day about completing my Harry Potter movie collection (I only have the first two). Thanks for sharing.

I would hope an Ultimate Blu-Ray of a combined DH set would still be in the offing.

I bought the blu-ray pack for the first six movies, and then I bought Deathly Hallows Part 1 on its own. I just need to pick up Part 2 in a couple weeks, and then I'll be fine.

This seems like a pretty retarded business move, though. What if people want to buy Harry Potter with their Christmas giftcards?

This sounds insane. If it's some sort of admission that physical media is dying they're being pretty premature about it. If they're pulling a Disney, that's just as idiotic and stupid.

I think though what this just means is next summer we're going to see the release of new editions of the Potter films. I remember they pulled the Bond films from circulation for a while too, just before they came out with new editions.

Just as long as I can get a regular DVD for my father so he can complete his collection, and then I can get the Ultimate edition Vol. 7 (or Vol. 7 and 8 if they're doing 2 sets) to complete mine. But I agree this is going to be a major screw-over for anyone getting gift cards, or who might need to replace a copy.

Alex

PS After writing the above I went to Google and found in short order that, yes Virginia, there will be an Ultimate Edition for Deathly Hallows, because one site posted a preview of a special feature that will be included in the Ultimate Edition. But Amazon has no listing for it yet. Which makes me wonder if the Ultimate Edition will still hit after Dec. 29...

Not buying it. This trick has been pulled with movies before. They'll be back.
I'm looking forward to picking up a box set in future.

Well, the article doesn't specify that this is to be forever, nor does it specify a time limit on the "vanishing" either. But I agree, its annoying.

I would hope an Ultimate Blu-Ray of a combined DH set would still be in the offing.

There is a Blu-Ray box set coming out in December with all 8 films included. Amazon has it priced at ~$97

Woah, the English boxset of all 8 movies is only £37.99. Although there is a deluxe set at £67.

I guess they think the panic-set buying will offset all of the illegal piracy that's to follow.

Of course, so long as the movie is available in one format or another (i.e. streaming), piracy won't be dented one iota. People who want to DL it are going to DL it in the first place anyway.

Considering that they had already announced a box set of the "Ultimate Editions" on both DVD and Blu-Ray set for Christmas of 2012, I'm not really all that concerned about it.

Also, when you read the above-linked article, it doesn't say they are recalling the DVDs, just that they aren't shipping new ones out. How many tens of thousands of copies do you think are sitting on store shelves right now? And how many more tens of thousands are in warehouses belonging to those same stores?

As with Disney's vault, it's just a marketing tactic.

For those "soccer mom" types who don't pay attention to things, sure they might rush out and buy a set of the movies ... For the rest of us, there's Amazon, and the internet, etc.

Amazon and the internet?! Wow! :p

Slight sarcasm on my point ... I won't name names (Laurie), but there are people around here (Allison) who don't understand (Amy) that "the Amazon" (Andy) is on the Internet, along with "the ebay" and other e-stores.
