Harry Potter 6 Moved to 2009!

Apparently, WB announced today that they have moved the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to July 17, 2009! They are citing the writer's strike and a "changing competitve landscape" as the reasons for pushing the film back.

Hmmm...I wonder why the move, especially with the original release date being relatively soon? Now I guess the HP fans will know how the Star Trek fans felt when STXI got pushed back...

Problems on set? Hmmmmmmm.

The article says that WB wanted a big tentpole pic for Summer 09 so they moved Harry Potter. But I would think it would still make a lot of cash and garner a lot of attention as the "big" holiday release...

No reason to assume there's anything more behind the decision than what they said. As with Star Trek, the studio saw itself with a weak slate for summer '09 (because the strike happened at the time when films for that period would've been going through development), so they're trying to shore up their summer schedule by moving their strongest tentpole picture there. Summer is the biggest, most competitive movie season of the year, so it makes sense that the studios would want their biggest releases there rather than in the winter. Yes, both HP6 and Star Trek would no doubt perform well in the winter, but the summer is more important to the studios.

HP can handle the summer, Star trek can not.
That remains to be seen. I'm excited to see a Star Trek film that a major studio is confident enough in to release in the summer. Paramount would not be bringing the film out in May (May, of all months, May!) if they weren't pleased with the project. Ambitious, yes, but this film is meant to make Star Trek a summer movie property.

Half-Blood Prince is in a similar boat, the studio realized the summer slate is looking a little weak and slipped in a guaranteed hit onto the playing board.

Wow, that's a huge move to make relatively close to the original release date, but Warners was up shit creek without a paddle for their summer 2009 slate.

One of the knock-on effects of this is that The Dark Knight is now a lock to take the worldwide box office crown for 2008, since Potter 6 was the only film that could have challenged it.

Do I dare ask why?

Summer is generally reserved for blockbuster films, and even in May Trek XI will be going up against some pretty solid competition. "Wolverine" is coming out the week before, "Angels and Demons" and "Terminator: Salvation" the week after. So far it has its opening week to itself in terms of 'event' films, but Wolverine and Terminator will syphon away the target audience, while A&E is probably going to attract sales across the board. I know, for my own part, if I'm going to see a film in May, Wolverine would be my first choice, then a toss up between Trek and Terminator depending on what more gets revealed about the projects between now and then (though at this point, I feel just as inclined to wait for both on DVD).

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Who's to say that Trek won't be so good that it will take some box office away from Terminator and the others? If it's a good film, then it will make plenty of money as a May release.

If a big movie dominates a single weekend in the current market it's done what's expected of a "tentpole;" if it's number one for another weekend it's done very well indeed. The reason a movie like "The Dark Knight" is such a big deal is because it does better than that and is therefore exceptional even among successful films.

"Star Trek" and "Watchmen" are currently the only movies that I've already made plans to see in 2009. Probably will catch "Harry Potter" but doubt I'll bother with "Wolverine" or yet another "Terminator" sequel.

"Angels And Demons" won't crowd anything.

That is stiff competition... now, if only Paramount would use this as an excuse to bring back our '08 Star Trek! ;)

Talk about bad timing. Entertainment Weekly must be pissed! I just received their big 'double issue' fall movie preview, and guess what's on the cover...yup, Harry himself. For a movie that won't come out till next summer!
