Ellison already established some kind of precedent over HIS version of CITY in terms of ownership, as stated at length in the book on that script. I'd sure love to see him fuck these people over, he's taken way too much crap for decades over CITY, he OUGHT to cash in.
Yeah. It's a good thing that, after 40 years, someone finally used elements from the aired version of "City" so that Ellison could release the hounds and establish that he owned all rights to the as-aired version of the episode. Oh, if only the animated spin-off, or the episode novelizations, or the comics, or novels, or Strange New Worlds stories had ever used something from "City," so he could've established his ownership sooner.
Personally, I'm finding myself hoping that Ellison will be successful, and that other TV writers (or their estates) will make similar demands. That way, instead of describing Ellison as a writer with an attitude problem, we can just call him "The Man Who Killed Star Trek For A Half-Percent Royalty He Never Wanted For A Half-Century."
