Hardest Game You've Ever Played?

Asuming handheld games qualify, then Contra 4 would be mine. Its especially galling since back in the day I owned at 1 and 2 for the NES. On 4 I'm lucky to make it through the first level. It REALLY makes me feel old.

I don't know why, but there seems to be some curse on Simpsons games where every single one has to be painfully difficult (although I haven't played "The Simpsons Game", so for all I know, it has remedied that). But from "The Simpsons Arcade Game" to "Bart vs. the Space Mutants", to "Escape from Camp Deadly" (which I only actually passed about 15 years after I'd first bought it, as I could barely get anywhere in it during childhood) to "Virtual Bart", to "The Simpsons Hit and Run", they all just go on and on and get harder and harder until I just to have to throw up my arms and give up.

I haven't played "Bart's Nightmare" and "The Simpsons Road Rage", but I heard the former is even harder than those others I've mentioned. It's a shame because so many of these games have such creative and fun level design and are so delightfully faithful to the show with wonderful graphics and little visual and audio gags that reference it hilariously. I'm torn between enjoying all the carefully crafted inside jokes and scenery and being frustrated with how difficult the games are - especially "Hit and Run", which eventually degenerates into the same formula over and over again (i.e. collect a bunch of items before the timer runs out) with the only variation being that it just gets tougher and tougher (i.e. less time, more items to collect). :(

When Ninja Gaiden came out on XBOX is was pretty hard at first until I got into it. Other than that, the only games that are really hard are the ones that are poorly made and have bad control schemes

But seriously, the older games were the hardest, like Contra and the no save spot ever.

The worst part of 'Allied Assault' was the sniper alley level, where the computer gets perfect accuracy, can see you just about anywhere, and are well-hidden.

Yes, that gets an honorable mention too. That was another take two steps and die level. I don't know how I ever had the patience to play MOHAA as much as I did after stuff like that!

The original Everquest. Man, some of the corpse runs you had to do after dying were BRUTAL as you often died over and over again and lost a level due to experience loss. LOL I miss those days.

Playing through the original Quake without cheat codes was a real Bitch. I'm pretty sure I remember mentioning the PS1 version of Quake II and it's distinct lack of cheat codes...

I can't imagine playing quake on a console. I'm all for FPS's on consoles, but there are a few where a mouse is needed, Quake being one of them Unreal Tournament being another. And as far as shooters go, quake isn't hard once you build up some skill. And I'm not talking mad skills, just learning how to move right.

I'm baffled, just plain hornswoggled that we've gotten to 6 pages and no mention of I Wanna Be The Guy.

Notice how "Be The Guy" rhymes with "Die"?

Personally, I wouldn't suggest playing this one. Just watch videos of it on Youtube so you can spare yourself the aggravation.

Heh. If you want to see difficult you should give Jumper Two a shot. It makes I Wanna Be The Guy look like a Kirby game.

I know. That's how I mastered the PS1 version of Quake II on all the different difficulty levels. It was quite an accomplishment. It's also the only reason I miss having a PlayStation console of some kind.

You could always trackdown the PC version, or pick up a used PS2 and play it again.

I already have the PC version of the first 3 Quake games. The PS1 version was just to give me a chance to play since I didn't have my own computer (or a copy of the game) at that time.
