Hardest Game You've Ever Played?

I gotta also say Wanted: Weapons of Fate was crappy! I got to the beginning level where you have to fight the SWAT team leader and it was nearly impossible to do. I kept getting killed so I traded the game in for another game.

That would be ... Prince of Persia : Warrior Within. I like the game actually, but the camera angles were offputing because it's not possible to see the route ahead. So I kept dying numerous times, especially if there's a timer to get away from the danger. It became so frustrating I dumped it after trying for the upmteenth time. And never bothered with PoP anymore.

^ The worst part was when the camera angle changed when you were in the middle of running along a wall and end changing direction and dying as a result. That said, I love that trilogy. WW was easily the hardest of the three, but doesn't hold a candle to the original in terms of sheer impossibility.

I just completed Conan on the PS3 and let me tell you, that was one hard struggle, especially the last level and the last boss Graven....a total nightmare, i have been on and off this level for about a month now, giving it little go here anf there and getting to the next save point.

I hate it when I play a game and it is fairly easy to beat and then a level comes where it seems impossible to advance. I am on that part now on Protoype where I got to fight that chick monster thing in the street. I cant get close to her and I am sick of running away and then trying different ways to beat her.

Hardest game i've ever played? It has to be 'The Hardest Game Ever' (http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/Owata_Hardest_Flash_Game_Ever_26_2007.php) Can't get past level 1

 Ohhhh, I've spent countless hours playing that game. But trust me, it's possible to finish it with enough patience!

I find it "easier" to play on a site where the picture is larger, like here: http://www.addictinggames.com/theworldshardestgame.html
Can't really play it well on a flat keyboard like the kind that laptops have, though, need to have one with thicker keys.

Probably Battletoads for the NES. Oh man, I love that game, but I had a heck of a time getting through it.

I remember Sonic when I was younger; not that the game itself was terribly hard but that you could not save it. Many a time I got near the end and had to stop. Bad times.

Zelda: Link's Awakening. It's rather fun when you actually make it to the first world... but it took me about a year in elementary school to figure out you had to throw magic dust on a raccoon...oh....

The Ninja Gaiden game on Xbox. Loved it. It was such a challenge.

Largely because Tomonobu Itagaki does seem to understand that games need to sell. Games only 1% of the potential audience can play aren't going to be long term sellers.

Then he has the cheek to add an "easy" mode (which, by all accounts equates to Hard on most games) where you are generally mocked for using it.

Whenever I think of "hard" one game springs to mind. Atari's Tempest. All you needed was nerves of steel, the reflexes of a cyborg, fine motor control equal to a brain surgeon, an unending pool of adrenaline and eyeballs that wouldn't dry out if you failed to blink. If you had all of those it was easy.

No wonder I'm so good at Tempest...

Everything that's been said about TMNT for NES is true. That disgrace should have never been released. Same for Fester's Quest. What a piece of shit.

Other Super-Hard games I remember, some good, some not...

  • The first Mega Man. (Try beating that without Game Genie, I dare you!)
  • Zelda 2
  • Little Nemo the Dream Master. (Christ, I hate that fucking game!)
  • Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Iron Mike is a beast!)
  • Quake II on the PS1 (No cheat codes. I did beat this game and master it on all difficulty levels, though. It was quite an accomplishment.)
  • Sonic Rush (Horrible Cameras...)
  • Star Fox Command (Horrible Controls...)
  • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
  • Dig Dug II
  • Star Trek: 25th Anniversary for the NES (Thankfully, the GameBoy and PC versions rocked. The NES version did get easier when you had the Nintendo Power issue that covered that title. Metroid was in there too.)
  • All the Metroid games. (They are awesome but, damn, are they tough!)
  • Virtually everything the AVGN has reviewed. (SMB3 is the only exception here, despite it's lack of a save feature.)
Anything else I should add to this list?

EDIT: Defender wasn't hard. It was just designed to keep going until you eventually died. I love that game.

EDIT 2: This page seemed semi-relevant to this conversation.

The original Elder Scrolls. I only got out of the beginning dungeon on around my 5th try simply because I ran into a monster I wasn't supposed to encounter until I had found a stronger weapon hidden at an earlier point.
