Hardest Game You've Ever Played?

I just remembered 'Stuntman', which was a driving game where you have to execute various driving stunts almost perfectly in order to pass. I never did finish it. Most of the movies that you work on are homages to famous films/franchises (like Indiana Jones, James Bond, Snatch, etc.). Seriously though, this is the most frustrating trial/error game that I ever played.

Barts Nightmare on the SNES
Ninja Gaiden 2 (360) the difficulty is all over the place
Golden Axe: shite rider (aka beast rider).
Call of Duty WaW on Veteran (much more harder with all the grenade spamming than past games on the some skill level)

also Flatout UC

Ninja Gaiden 2 on Master Ninja mode.

Makes me cry just thinking about it.

Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma

Never understood why people thought/think the new NG games were "OMFGHARD".

Blew through the first one on the hardest difficulties a couple of times during the week I rented it, bought Black and played it through again. It's just knowing what weapon to use for which kind of spawn and making sure you're constantly moving. Just try to be in the air most of the time and you won't get hit much.

Now a couple of the original NG games had stages that were frustratingly hard. Insanely difficult final bosses, and stages that were hard to get through by virtue of the NES' classic "we'll spawn this bat right on top of you after you've jumped" problem.

How could this thread have gone on so long without mentioning the Battle Toads air bike stage?

Yeah, apparently it sold very well but was heavily criticized for being absurdly difficult. And it was. Unless you played with Donatello you were basically asking to lose.

This is pretty much the reason why it got such a bad review from the Angry Video Game Nerd.

I never thought of it as that hard. In fact I quite clearly remember finishing the game, then that night dreaming there was more game.

Battlestar Galactica for PS2/Xbox
The first 5-6 levels were pretty bad, since the game forced you to restart each level when you died and your wingmen were pretty damn horrible, so it was pretty much you against hordes of Cylons trying to blow you up. On top of that, a bunch of levels revolved around you having to intercept enemies before they got to the Galactica, along with one level where you have to operate all the point defense cannons on the Galactica because the AI couldn't take out the scores of bombers and suicide tankers sent your way. I got to level 6/7 (I can't remember, it's been a while), where I had to fly a Cylon Raider in perfect formation for a long ass time (I learned it was like 10 minutes on a GameFAQ) and constantly screwed up and died, though I did manage to get about halfway through the whole thing before I quit.

Ill be blunt, you're in the minority ;)

Zelda Majora's Mask. I haven't played this game since beating it in 2000/2001, and I'm not sure if the game itself was actually hard or just tedious with the 3 day countdown. My memory may be playing tricks on me in regards to the difficulty, but as I said it's the one Zelda game I really don't want to go back and play again, unlike say The Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past, or Ocarina of Time. I just remember feeling very accomplished when I did beat Majora's Mask.

Contra I always found difficult, without the Konami code that is. I think all of the Contra games are fairly difficult without cheats. Sure you and a buddy can beat the game with the 30 lives, but trying it with 3 lives is not exactly a picnic. Super Mario Bros. the Lost Levels is up on the difficulty curve too, I don't think I ever managed to beat that one.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who had trouble with TMNT.

That game was one of those that everyone I knew owned and loved to play but none of us had ever got past the 2nd level. Some weird, really unfair designs.

We would have played any game featuring the Turtles. We did.

How'd you get past the dodgy camera and the ninjas spamming incendiary shuriken on Master mode in Ninja Gaiden 2? Thats what made the game so frustrating.

Same here. I remember loving that game, but at the same time I don't remember every accomplishing anything in the game. If it had to do with the turtles though, I bought it (well, had it bought for me when I pleaded and begged).

I still like the TMNT arcade game. At least I could beat that.

oh, i forgot one: Spider-Man on the Master System. fucking impossible to beat Electro.

Just Electro? I found the whole game to be impossible.

The hardest I've ever played is R-Type Delta on the PSOne. Either you commit every single bullet or ship to memory and just keep playing, getting slightly further each time, or you won't last 10 minutes. Never finished it.

I also have to throw in Asterix and the Great Rescue on the Mega Drive. Impossible time limits on every level, completion was just plain out of the question when each level had barely a 4-second margin for error.

The camera system in NG can indeed be pretty sketchy. To be honest, some of the time I'm reacting more on intuition and memory than to what is on the screen. Are you talking about the boss battle specifically with the red ninjas? Move around a lot, use charge attacks, try using moves like the guillotine throw that will give you a second or two of temporary invulnerability to the shuriken. Take them on one at a time and stay away from the boss as much as possible until they are dead, then fight him one on one.

My skills have been honed since the days of the TI and Vic 20 computers, Atari 2600 and ColecoVisions. What can I say, I'm l33t!

Yeah, the difficulty level went way down after that first game. The arcade game (and its NES port), The Manhattan Project, Turtles in Time (and SNES port)--all pieces of cake compared to the original. I remember finishing Turtles in Time in one sitting, and thinking to myself, "damn, these games have gotten too easy."

Did anyone play Fester's Quest? That was a deliberately unforgiving game. If you lost you had to start all over.

I remember I got as far as the Technodrome once.
