I have just bought silence of the lambs, hannibal and hannibal: the rising and i was just going to start watching them when i noticed theres a 4th called red dragon can i watch the other 3 without seeing red dragon or will it make no sence? thankyou (sorry about spelling)

'Red Dragon' is a prequel to 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal', and 'Hannibal Rising' is a (terrible) prequel to all of them, so no, you can watch all of them without seeing Red Dragon and have no problem understanding the narrative. The only major connecting characters between Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal are Jack Crawford and Lector (and Barney the guard, I guess, but he barely qualifies), and no significant reference is made to the events that happened before Starling meets Lector.

Red Dragon is not as bad as some make it out to be in my opinion. For being a Brett Ratner film it's actually pretty good, and Hopkin's presence elevates the material, though I would recommend the earlier and superior Michael Mann version of the novel Red Dragon, which is called 'Manhunter' and predates even 'Silence of the Lambs.'

Brian Cox plays Lector instead of Anthony Hopkins, and William Peterson from CSI plays FBI agent Will Graham, in essentially the same role (interviewing Lector to gain insights on a serial killer) that Foster's Clarice Starling had in Lambs. Edward Norton plays Graham in Red Dragon, which also adds a scene where Graham wounds and captures Lector after being greviously wounded, which was only allluded to in Manhunter.

I would recommend watching both films eventually, as they both have their strong points, but it's not necessary to do so before watching the three films you mentioned above.

I agree with Locutus 100%. Red Dragon is actually fairly decent, especially for a Brett Ratner film, but it would probably look better if the superior Manhunter hadn't already been made.

But I would concur with the suggestion of viewing both films: each is certainly watchable -- and each has their strong points, as Locutus said. But I would recommend not watching them back-to-back, unless you are looking to make direct comparisons. Both movies feature basically the same plot (although there are a few minor story differences), so you might get a strong sense of deja vu if you watch them too close together.

Oh, and just for future reference, this sort of thread probably would best be placed in the General TV & Media forum. :techman:

Gotta agree with Red Dragon. I know a lot of people who prefer it over Manhunter - but only because of the moderninity of it all.

I just couldn't get into Red Dragon at all, whereas I really enjoyed Manhunter. It wasn't bad - but for me it just didn't grab me. I was the same with Hannibal. I didn't think it was dreadful, but I'll watch it if it's on.

I've never watched them in order - I most likely never will - but I've still enjoyed them (despite the lack of grabbyness) on their own. I can't imagine missing Red Dragon from a marathon. Though I could happily miss Rising.

Manhunter - a great film made by a master.

Red Dragon - a mediocre movie made by Mr. Paint By Numbers.

Yep.

The only movies you need to watch are Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon is also good but not needed. The other movies are complete trash and should be ignored.
