Hanks talks sneaking onto the set of TWOK

Steve Guttenberg's character, had it existed, would have been trying to expose Kirk, not as a man out of time, but as a charlatan, trying to cash in on the whales somehow. He would have made a last ditch effort at the hospital, and when he realized that Kirk and company were the real deal, that's when he would have come through in the crunch, diverting the cops with some ruse to let Gillian get away with Kirk and company in the elevator.

See, that's my thinking, that or reveal them as aliens, after some comedy scene having followed Spock or something.

I had the epiphany last year or thereabouts that it's not Murphy TVH needed...it was Steve Gutenberg. Jealous pining after Gillian from afar, trying to uncover Kirk, but comes through in the end. Gutenberg is a perfect fit for Trek, Murphy is great, but would have been too manic. Eddie would be better suited to a serious role in Trek, as an actual Starfleet officer...not least as he probably would have loved that more and put more into it as a result.
So Guttenberg in the (expanded) Bob role all jealous/suspicious then uncovering it all (spacemen from the future!) and eventually coming through and helping them and then waving goodbye to Gillian at the end 80s ET style.

Murphy in a cameo as a Starfleet officer maybe one of the captains in the opening (who could briefly meetngreet the 7 at the end after the trial)

Sounds like the ultimate 80s SF movie!

Ta Da! Though with the Caveat that maybe Murphy leads into a bigger role in V.

Ha, his story reminds me of what the Red Dwarf guys got up to - last year I was in the studio audience for the recording of an episode of series XI of Red Dwarf, which was filmed at Pinewood studios, literally right next door to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Between takes the cast were telling funny stories and anecdotes, and one of them was how they'd made friends with the Star Wars crew and managed to get onto the sets, then nicked a bit of the Millennium Falcon set and put it in Starbug.

As for other well-known actors in Trek films, don't forget Alfre Woodard in First Contact. Not a Hanks level of notoriety, but she'd been in a few successful films before FC. And Ron Perlman was the Viceroy in Nemesis - again not an a-list star, but he basically did/does everything - TV, movies, voice acting, and he was in Alien Resurrection, Enemy at the Gates and Blade 2 before NEM.

Connery would've been a good choice to play Robert Picard, though, budget permitting.
It's hard enough believing that everyone in France speaks with an English accent by the 2300s, let alone that one brother talks in an English accent and the other has a Scottish accent!

Not really. Fiction conditions us to think that people of a given nationality will always speak English with a heavy accent, and some people do so in real life (e.g. Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jackie Chan), but plenty of people who master a second language are able to speak it without an accent. For instance, actor Michael Vartan of Alias. He's a Frenchman, but he speaks English with no trace of a French accent. After all, if you learn a foreign language, ideally you want to speak it without your own accent, right? I'm sure the people in Picard's family have French accents when they speak French, but assuming they've learned English since childhood -- and probably learned it from people in Great Britain, which is right next door -- then it's perfectly reasonable that they'd speak English with an English (or Scottish) accent.

I doubt that Connery would have helped TFF, since he tended to appear in a lot of bombs (Highlander 2 anyone?).
Connery won a BAFTA for 1986's The Name of the Rose and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1987's The Untouchables. His career was peaking in the late 80s, with his highest popularity since his James Bond days and an unprecedented amount of critical appreciation. So yeah, he would have helped the box office.

I never said he wasn't a good actor, and nobody was disappointed if he was attached to a movie that they already wanted to see, more that he wasn't really a name that could bring in an audience on his own the way a mid-80s Murphy or mid-90s Hanks could.

He could probably swing it on TV 'let's watch this dad' 'nah' 'it's got James Bond in'
Then hope you didn't play that card on highlander 2 a year or so earlier. Of course, the film would also be known as 'Star Trek the one with James Bond in' same way 09 is sometimes known as 'that new one with the bloke from heroes in'.

if it hadn't been for Spielberg specifically wanting Connery to play Indiana Jones father (apparently Lucas wasnt too keen and wanted someone older, more bookish - like Gregory Peck) the chances are hed have probably done Trek V.. and why wouldn't he.. IV had been a big success bigger than anything hed done aside Bond at that point so would've been a tempting offer
