Hamilton

Overnight I became a huge fan of the musical Hamilton. Great music, not bad as history and excellent performances. You can stream it on Disney+.

Watched it today. Really entertaining with a very talented cast.

I would LOVE to see Hamilton, but I don't want to sign up for Disney Plus. :(

Well, then how are you watching The Mandalorian?

My wife watched Hamilton the day it came out. I only paid half attention to it. She was enthralled.

Seemed clever to me, but...weird.

Quite clever and certainly well done, but I really didn't like it. Not a fan of something as cheesy as musical theatre doing this.

In the interests of full disclosure, I'm not a fan of musical theatre full stop. So hardly an unbiased assessment.

Devoured Hamilton the day of it’s release. It was even better than I thought it would be. Renée Goldsberry (Anjelica), Leslie Odom Jr. (Burr), Daveed Diggs (Lafayette/Jefferson), all Tony winners, were incredible. The close ups of Anjelica’s face showing the anguish she felt in giving Alexander to her sister. Great.

Framing the Ham/Jefferson and Ham/Burr relationships, as rap beefs was a stroke of genius. Then having the story seen from Burr’s viewpoint, the guy who would eventually kill Ham, just ratcheted the drama x100.

I’v actually read some criticism of the show since it’s Dis+ debut having to do with the show not fitting the tenor of the times and being a holdover from the Obama era. One review lamented Hamilton not taking a more decisive stand on some issues and making Ham into a hero.

Anyone who has seen the show would know that Ham is not portrayed as any hero. About the only one who gets off Scott free is Washington, who is practically deified. Washington was a slave owner and not a grest battle strategist. The real “heroes” in the story are Anjelica and Eliza Schuyler.

Anyway, great show. I highly recommend.

Only thing I knew about it for years is that it was a musical (which I like). Having watched the trailer, not sure I’m interested.

I’d love it if Hadestown was recorded and released!

Hamliton is a genre changing event - it has tanscended from mere musical play to something that is both culturally and historically significant.

Lin-Manuel Miranda had a stroke of genius coming up with a diverse cast as a statement of itself and proving through Hamilton what the core of the country was built on - it is often the simple line of "Immigrants - we get the job done!" that elicits the greatest response because it rings true and Hamilton embodied everything the American Dream stands for.

Going further Miranda also shows Hamilton for who he truly was - a human being with strengths and flaws. The first half of the musical sees him rise in fame through the Revolutionary War while the second it is the private person that gets into the spotlight, adultery and the loss of his son and marriage at the breaking point.

The cast is stellar top to bottom - you can feel the passion they have for the project and that they are giving it their all. In the leadup to the Disney+ release there were many Zoom interviews with the cast to promote Hamilton (as if it needed any promotion at all) and one of the things they state unanimously is while they had a fantastic time on Hamilton they're all glad it's over for them - 8 shows a week and each time being at the top is hard i can imagine the strain both mental and physical is not something you can put away easy.

My favorite songs:

The Schyler Sisters (awesome "girl group" moment introducing a strong female cast.. and Peggy!)

Helpless (Eliza falling in love with Hamilton)

Satisfied (the first tragic event of Hamilton - Angelica being in love with Hamilton himself whom she discovers a kindred spirit in but stepping aside to have Eliza be happy)

History has its eyes on you (the combination of Andrew Jackson's Washington, the cast complimenting the theme in the background and Washington warning Hamilton of what he's about to enter into is brilliant)

Wait for it ( Burr's central piece humanizing him and putting him beyond being merely the villain who kills Hamilton)

Burn ( Eliza finds out about Hamilton's infidelity and it breaks her)

It's quiet uptown ( The Hamiltons' son dies in a duel which Hamilton himself encouraged his son to do and gave him advice for - a brutal performance by Miranda as a broken father begging for forgiveness from his wife)

What are yours?

All the ones you mentioned, but I'd also add:

"One Last Time" — I liked this song a lot listening to the cast recording, but seeing it in the film with Christopher Jackson singing his heart out... damn.

"Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" — I love how it not only ties all of the story's themes together, but it also makes this Eliza's story as much as Alexander's.

There's also a zillion little bits in the lyrics that are fun to catch as they go whizzing by. One of my favorites is in "The Adams Administration," where Hamilton has the line "Sit down, John, you fat mother—[BLEEP]," and then he drops a book from the upper walkway of the set as the lights flash red and a whistling sound is followed by an explosion — he's literally dropping the F-bomb while also throwing in a sly reference to 1776. Genius.

From the first time I heard “Wait for It,” The way the song expressess Aaron Burr’s lack of understanding of Alexander, his frustration, envy, and finally, anger, it’s been the song I look most forward to when I go through the soundtrack. Burr thought the best way to advance in life was to play it cautious and wait for his opportunity and pounce. Ham saw what he wanted and just went for it, consequences be damned. All of this is cotained in Wait for It. Leslie Odom’s performance in the movie is inspired.

“My Shot” might be one of the most intricate lyrics ever. Now, watching the movie with the captions on, the words come rapid fire and in waves. LMM sets up multiple rhyme schemes in individual lines. The song is a lyrical tour-de-force.

“The Battle of Yorktown/The World Turned Upside-down.” This was the first Ham song I heard. It was on.the 2016 Tony Awards show. nlown away by this performance.

But really, just one killer song after another.

This show is a cultural phenomenon and it’s availability on Dis+ has been one of the few bright spots in 2020.

The closest I found to that was a promo on certain boxes of Kellogg's cereals where you could get two weeks free by scanning a QR code and sending them a photo of your receipt, but I don't know if those boxes are still in circulation or not. There might be other deals floating around as well.
