Halo 5: Guardians

I still haven't made it through the campaign. I can't even point to any specific flaw with the game (gameplay feels perfectly fine).

I just don't care, which is probably the most chilling thing I could feel about a Halo game.

I've been that way a couple times over the past 15 years. The first time was Halo 3. When it came out I wasn't really too excited (I don't know why because I loved Halo 2 and had been wanting to see what happened next), and once I started playing I just found it a chore to get through because I found the story and gameplay to be a boring rehash. I played it once then shelved it. For some reason I still bought ODST and really wasn't feeling that one, I played it a couple of hours then never finished it until I got the Master Chief Collection. My interest was at an all-time low until Reach came out and I started to love the franchise again. I played it so much though that by the time 4 came out I was kind of burned out on Halo but I still picked up a copy just to see what was up with the Chief and shelved it after one play though.

I bought Guardians alongside the MCC and Star Wars Battlefront when I picked up my X1, but I was really more interested in the latter. Though I shouldn't have been, it's kind of a mess in my opinion. I had a little fun with Battlefront in the beginning though, and I basically just played through Guardians once to see the story and then didn't mess with it for a month or so. I thought it was OK but I wasn't completely feeling it, at least not enough to play it over and over. But once I was just about fed up with Battlefront I busted it out again and have been playing it quite a bit, mostly the campaign. I think it just took me a couple of play throughs to really get used to. I just finished a Legendary/Lone Wolf play through today, which I really don't recommend. At least not expecting a good time, just if you want the achievements or to see if you can do it. It's probably the easiest Halo game to beat on Legendary (it's more a test of patience than skill) but it's also one of the more irritating. I think they should rename it Bulls#!t mode.

I had a similar experience with Halo 4 although the fact that it still had splitscreen co-op did prolong its time before shelving significantly. The wife and I did full playthroughs both when it came out and later with MCC. Halo 5 I shelved immediately because I don't have time for the multiplayer.

Halo 4 generally left me mostly indifferent, but it was the high point for co-op in some ways (my buddy could online-hop into a splitscreen co-op game with the wife and I, which was pretty great).

I rarely mess with multiplayer in any Halo game I just play campaigns. The first time I tried it was Halo 3 and long story short I found the people so irritating that I didn't play another Halo game online until Guardians. I've only played a few matches, and the people are still irritating, but I had a little fun. I muted everybody but they still managed to be annoying. At one point I started getting lit up by an AI boss and I turned around and killed it, which I guess pissed my teammate off for some reason (maybe he was trying to kill it but he should have done a better job) and he had a little temper tantrum and followed me around shooting at me. Seems to me from my limited experience that Halo's online community (in general obviously not everybody) get way too worked up over a video game. Or maybe I just always get matched up with the bottom of the barrel.

This requisition system for Guardians is REALLY dumb, maybe the worst thing about the game. I don't know who would actually pay money for this stuff because all the packs I've earned and opened have been mostly useless. I'd like to get some different armor (though I like my Noble armor that came with the Memories Of Reach Req Pack) or at least a different colored visor instead of blue. All I get are a bunch of needlers and boosts.

Plus it's hard to earn Reqs when your teammates are all morons. Was playing a game of Capture The Flag today and I grab the other teams flag, our flag is still safe at our base. On my way back to our base I pass 3 of my teammates heading the other direction, none of them escort me in spite of the Escort icon over my head and the humongous flag I'm clearly carrying. I have no clue what they were off to do, since I had the flag and ours was at the base, there was nothing for them to do. Objective-wise that is, I'm guessing they just wanted to run around and shoot people but there are game types for JUST that, they did't have to play Capture The Flag. So I get within feet of our base and there are 3 members of the other team waiting to ambush me. They recover their flag and grab ours then take it back for the only point of the match and we lose.

Edit: Booted the game up later on and had a much better time and better teams. Got on an arena team that were actually trying, we lost a game of Stronghold but then won 2 games of Capture The Flag 3-0. Then I played some Warzone and had a pretty good team. It was a close game until I called in a Random Vehicle which turned out to be a Warthog with the rocket launcher turret. I had parked it and killed an AI boss then a guy jumped in the drivers seat and we just drove around for about 7 minutes without dying and were destroying the other team. Between him running them over and my turret we probably racked up 40 kills between us. Especially when he drove us through the door of the enemy base and I killed half their team.

I see there are new achievements for Score Attack, and read online that they're adding it but I don't know when it's going to be implemented.

I think I'm just going to stop playing this game online except for Warzone Firefight. Matchmaking is terrible, even with it set on Focused I'm always just getting thrown in with people who are like 100 levels higher than me. And it might not be so bad if I had some of those people on my team but they seem to throw all the low level players on one team. I just got out of a game where I was the highest level player on my team (at a measly level 25) and the other team were all between 80-127. It was a Slayer match and they beat us 50-17.

One of those guys turned out to be pretty cool though. I guess he felt bad about tearing us up and helped me get a pretty difficult MCC achievement by letting me sit on my ass while he did a Legendary speedrun. It was pretty fun to watch. At one point told me to stay where I was, he took a chopper and did a f'kn Evel Knievel and landed on the top of a Forerunner building, drove along the top then jumped it again and dismounted in mid-air and landed on something. Then he disappeared and I heard the faint sound of sniper rounds in the distance, a few seconds later it teleported me to where he was with all these dead Covies laying around.
