HALO 3: ODST - your thoughts?

For the longest time I thought ODST was a misspelled referrence to the game's soundtrack.

I played it more last night. I'm finding it to be a lot tougher than previous versions of Halo and therefore a bit more frustrating
.

even on easy/casual?

I'm playing it on Normal and I'm wishing I would have started on Easy. I really don't want to start it over, but I may have to. If it gets progressively more difficult as you progress in the game, I can see where I'll not be able to finish it.

I know on Halo 3, you could go to the menu and select which level and what skill level you want to play it on and the game would continue from there. ODST uses the same menu style, so this might work

A buddy of mine picked one up and he didnt like it. It looked cool to me but he kept saying it wasnt "true HALO" whatever that means. He is a HALO fanatic so I figure something must be wrong with it if he dont like it.

^ Probably means about the same thing as "true Star Trek", a phrase I've seen on TBBS often enough.

My roomie and I played through the first part of the game yesterday. It took some getting used to, since your character is so much weaker than a typical Halo game. Once we figured out what worked, we enjoyed it quite a bit though.

Now when you guys talk about the character being weaker, what does that mean? Shielding/health? Melee hit? 'Cause when I play Halo I don't bum rush the bad guys I hang back and fire from cover.

No shields - even a few hits will cause screen shake and redout as you get "winded". A few more hits will eat into your health, which can only be replenished at medical stations or from medkits. The beep-beep of your medical status monitor gets to be a constant accompaniment to the saxophone-laden soundtrack.

I just finished on Normal and I have to say I enjoyed it - the Rookie doesn't get much to do in the early levels since he's roaming about looking for clues to the fate of the rest of the team, which triggers off the flashback missions where they (as experienced vets) face much greater odds... but once you meet up with Dare at the datacore the Rookie comes into his own.

I dunno, they made out like these guys were nowhere near Master Chief's level, but the whole game has the feel of the early levels of Halo 3 - a prolonged running battle against the Covenant with only marginal victories. I really hope the EU deals with the usefulness of the "asset" you secure in the game, though, because as it stands it seems like it would have made f**k-all difference to the events of Halo 3...

As for the rest of the storyline, I quite enjoyed it... standard military unit misfit fare but competently done (even if I wish Tricia Helfer's character could have been replaced with Morena Baccarin... hell, Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk were in the squad alongside Fillion, why not make it a proper reunion?)

They could at least have voiced the Rookie at the end though... even the Chief got more lines.

Again I don't see where the reviews are calling this a 6 hour game?!?

I started a game on Legendary Sunday morning and after 4 hours or so got about a little less than half way through.
Then on Sunday early evening 3 other friends and I fooled around with Firefight mode for about an hour and a half and had a blast!

When then started a fresh game on Heroic and after three and a half hours made it about ¾ of the way through.
About the only way I see someone beating the game in 5-6 hours is if you play it on the easiest mode and race through the levels avoiding fights and such.

For me the game was well worth the price I paid which equaled out to about $31.00

Amazon had a $5.00 off game code, $5.00 code for MP3 downloads and $10.00 off the next game purchase.
To top it all off the next day after it shipped I got a notice saying the game had a $9.00 price drop which Amazon promptly credited back to my bank account. Awesome.

The Icing on the cake is the fact I don’t have any of the Halo MP maps so for me it’s the best value I’ve gotten on a game in a while.

Oh and the game is really fun too :techman:

If they hadn't originally promoted it as an add on pack I doubt anyone would have noticed it was short. It didn't feel any shorter than Halo 2 or 3 to me... so if they didn't complain about that then why complain about this?

Agreed.

Sadly there aren't many games now a days that are much longer than 8-10 hours but then again I always add another 3-4 hours to any of those because I always play on the hardest setting and I always take my time to explore the worlds these guys have taken so much time to create.

Bottom line (IMO) if you're a fan of the Halo series, ODST is a must have.

Is it just me, or do warthogs seem to flip more easily in ODST than they did in regular Halo 3?

Seems like you can't go over a speed bump without it ending up upside down.

Eh, I still think the game is really short. My roomie and I burned through the campaign on Legendary in a single evening.
Me and my cousin did that with Halo 3, Halo games are short. Hell a lot of games are short, I don't like that fact but it is true that 5-8 hours is all you can expect from a lot of games now.

I dunno about that but the AI of the gunner seems to have gotten worse - forget firing at the damn Wraith in the distance, target the Ghost that's right up our arse and spraying us with hot, hot plasma!

I gave up on Heroic and nabbed a Brute Chopper so I could aim my own damn guns.

Halo 1 bored me pretty quickly so never bothered to play 2 & 3 but decided to give this one a go and played Split screen co-op with a friend (well 3 of us actually so we kept swapping). I enjoyed the game mostly and it was funny though quite short. We completed the game on Normal in under 5 hours but we plan to play the harder difficulties soon...

I don't think I could ever really enjoy Halo on my own but full SP Co-op is always fun on most games so I might buy Halo 3 and go through co-op with a friend.

I'd say 8 out of 10, which is a good score from me since I have never given any game more than 9 out of 10.

Finished it on Legendary last night and I can easily say I doubled (maybe more) the so called 5-6 hour time frame.
I still have all the firefight games (which I'm looking forward too)
and all of the MP stuff since I've never played any of it.

All in all the game has been very enjoyable and fits well with the rest of the Halo games.

Well worth it in my opinion. :techman:

8.5/10
