Had to put our cat down today.

Nerdius Maximus

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Friday night he started breathing very rapidly, and on saturday we took him to an emergency vet. They did some x-rays and found that his heart had been enlarged for some time, and that it was starting to fail. This really sucks, he was such a great kitty.

I'm so sorry to hear that, he wasn't even very old. Losing a furry friend is so hard.

Nerdius, my deepest sympathy to you. If anyone here can understand what you are feeling, it's me. Last year, my wife and I were faced with the same decision - our boy lost his ability to use his back legs and could no longer stand or walk. Which meant he couldn't feed himself or use the litterbox. It was the most difficult decision I've ever made in my life and I was completely devastated by it. He died in my hands and part of me died on that table with him.

I've been pretty messed up since that day. He was 21 and that was a huge part of my life I had to say goodbye to.

:(

If you're like me, you'll think of your boy every day.

That's horrible. Only four years old. I wonder what caused it. My condolences for the loss of your pet. :(

^that was kinda rude.

my condolences to you Nerdius. four years old is way too young.

I had to have my cat Astro put down just over 5 years ago. I still miss him, and reading this thread is bringin' tears to my eyes.:weep:

Astro had stopped eating and when I took him to the vet they prescribed some medication that was supposed to make him hungry and also gave me a syringe to force feed him with.

after a couple of days he still was not eating and had dropped several pounds. I took him back to the vet and x-rays showed the he had an enlarged heart, and tests indicated his kidneys were failing.

they gave me more meds for him and wanted me to continue force feeding him in the hopes that he would start eating on his own again while they tried to figure out if they could do anything to get him healthy again, but he ended up havin' a stroke the next day. I really hated to have him put down but there was nothing else to be done.

I still miss him, and look forward to seein' him again at the Rainbow Bridge.:weep:

I put my cat down yesterday. He was too heavy and I'd been holding him a while.

Not even in the neighborhood of being funny.

Nerdius, sorry for the loss of your furry family member. I had to put my dog down a couple of months ago so I know how you're feeling.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss...especially so soon. :(

He'll be waiting for you, though...I truly believe it.

Thanks, everyone. Yeah, it was hard, but we're doing alright, all things considered. We knew there was no real recourse, and that actually helps. It means I won't be questioning the decision for the rest of my life, wondering if there's something else I could have done. His heart was failing and he was going to die. I asked how it could have happened so suddenly, and they said that as the heart enlarges, there's a period of time where it being enlarged actually makes it work better before it suddenly begins to shut down. And that's what must have happened, because up until Friday he was very playful and energetic. I never had a clue anything was wrong with him.

The vet said it was probably something congenital. Makes sense looking back, because as a kitten his body was all out of proportion. He had a skinny little body, really long, strong legs and a tiny little head. He used to crack us up because he'd scuttle around sideways like a crab with his back arched up in the air. Then he'd always get into the dirty clothes and take off with bras and stuff. He got one around his neck one day and went tearing around the house frantically trying to get it off.
I remember one day when we were remodeling the bathroom he snuck in, picked up a little wrench and ran down the hall with it. He was a character.

Here he is at about 5 months old.

Oh..:( So sorry that happened, Nerdius. To have it happen that suddenly must have been awful.

I love the story about him running off with the bra. He was a beauty. It sounds like he had a fun life with lots of love.

He also liked to unlace shoes and chew on the strings. That's why those shoes are on top of a bookshelf in the pic. Today I came home, took off my shoes and left them on the floor. It felt weird.

Wow, sorry to hear about your beautiful cat. It's hard to lose 'em, especially when they are young.

The upside is that we still have three other animals, and having them there softens the blow a little. Last time I had to have a cat put down that was all there was, and the house was empty of animals, and that's a very strange feeling. They all miss their brother, though.
