So before this Superbowl there was talk from the network that they were worried about viewership, that the two teams in this superbowl weren't popular/big enough to pull in the viewership.

Superbowl XLIV Beets MASH Finale Viewership Record.

So, what was that about big-market teams needed to bring in viewership for the Superbowl?

There was no way the Super Bowl was going to be lower rated than last year because you had Peyton Manning in it.

If the Vikings had won and the Super Bowl was Peyton Manning vs. Brett Favre I think you'd have seen just crazy high rating like 115million people watching it.

I will say it was amazing to see that many people tuned in to a single broadcast. I honestly was of the school of thought that it had become physically impossible in the 500 channel/Internet universe for this to ever happen again.

I wish it wasn't wasted on a football game (sorry, not a fan) but better the Super Bowl than American Idol or Survivor, I guess.

That is pretty close to what I thought. With U.S. TV viewership becoming increasingly divided, I thought that the MASH finale would hold the record for at least generations to come.

I wonder whether this record will be regularly set and reset by future Super Bowls now.
