I'm 100% certain I want a vasectomy.

I'm hoping some other men here will have had a vasectomy so they can relate their experiences to me so I can get a better understanding of the procedure and what to expect.

I take it it's an out-patient procedure under local anesthesia.

How long will I not be able to have intercourse after the procedure.

What do you suppose the odds are of the vasectomy not taking (eg, swimmers still getting through)?

Yes, outpatient with local. You'll hear more snipping than feeling.
Intercourse, a few days. After a week you'll forget you and the dog have something new in common.
After 30 days you bring a sample in and they test for swimmers.

Recommend you get a couple quality jockstraps and wear them for a couple of days (especially right after the procedure). Stretching of stitches by gravity is something you wont want.

Not a big deal.

I would have probably had this done already (since I definitely don't want kids) but my medical insurance doesn't cover it.

Many insurance plans cover vasectomies. So they're effectively free.

Vasectomy reversals are almost never covered by insurance, and have a fairly poor success rate > 5 years out. They're usually about $15,000...for the first try.

The divorce rate in the US is > 50%. One of the top reasons men get vasectomy reversals? Remarriage.

I'm sure there are plenty of married couples in which the husband has already had his tubes tied and his wife not only was not such a shrew that she made him reverse it, but actually supported his decision in the first place because maybe *she* doesn't want kids either.

Interesting how facts and statistics are blind to emotional context, yet you can always count on a bitter soul to bog them down with their own baggage. Not talking about situations, nor have I made any qualifications about why people might choose to reverse, or not reverse. I was only invoking statistics, and playing Devil's Advocate.

Actually, if I could get this done, it might go some way towards *easing* some of my issues. But as I said, my insurance will not cover surgery such as this. At least I don't think it will. One of the issues I spoke of is that I might be just a tad embarrassed to ask them.

My insurance does (or did) have a list of operations that they would cover or partially cover. Might want to check to see if yours provides a similar service. Of course, I'm sure they get asked for about much weirder services than a vasectomy.

seriously though, I must apologize for my tone, it's been a long day. I intended no offense.

I apologize too. It's a sensitive topic (no pun), and it's hard to generalize how a couple might be struggling with it in a very complex not black-and-white way.

It's also undeniable there are individuals out there who do not know their marriage is going to end and they might remarry and want kids again (or not) when they get their vasectomies. Or single individuals who obtain one and change their minds after some time, for whatever reason (love, therapy, lobotomy ).

I just wanted to voice that side, since I know there are plenty of voice on the side of vasectomy = yes!

About the only thing I know about vasectomies is that the people who have had one can get periodic infections that hurt like you've been kicked in the balls. I know that because a good friend had a vasectomy and about a year later had to go see a urologist for severe pain. The urologist was like "Oh yeah happens all the time. Here have some antibiotics." Since that time my friend has similar issues twice more, for three times over about eight years.

I had one. It was supposed to be pain-free, under a local, two small incisions and he put titanium clamps on my vas.

It hurt like fuck. He hit some nerve and I had a white hot pain shoot through me like when the dentist hits one of your nerves by mistake, only starting in my balls. I almost sat up and killed him, not intentionally, just instinct. He was surprised I didn't pass out.

Afterwards, I got this weird muscle pull inside my left thigh (aductor?) which has not healed in 4 years. I used to be able to do a good split (Karate, etc) but not anymore, no amount of stretching affects it, and no doctor has been able to explain it.

My advice is, NEVER DO ELECTIVE SURGERY. Even if it works, there's always potential for some stupid thing to go wrong. Plus you're more likely to get Necrotizing Fascitis in a hospital than anywhere else.
