Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy

I want this album but i'm not desperate for it, so I have asked for it for Christmas.

Besides, Weiland's new album is out on the same day which is far more important.

I found a bit weird. There's only three or four songs that can be viewed as being standard GnR. There are not that good, but still... I found the rest of the tunes to be mundane at best.

I was going to ask about this, ow man of you Americans are going to take up this offer, even if you are not a G'n'R fan?
I'm excluded by the fact I live south of the 49th but not in the US.

Soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper, which this past spring offered to send a free can of the beverage to "everyone in America" (excluding ex-GN'R members Slash and Buckethead) if GUNS N' ROSES' new album, "Chinese Democracy", were to arrive anytime during the calendar year 2008, has revealed details of the plan

I've heard on an Australian site - G n' R now should be known as "The Axl Rose Experience". I don't really care, as there is much better rock music out there.

Well, since my copy is paid for I've DLed it and listened to it.

It's pretty good, overall its not as fussy as I thought it would be, the standard of the songwriting is good, I think it's going to take quite a few listens to appreciate it though.

Unfortunately it's not 14 years worth of good though, not even close, so history is going to deem it a failure.

I've listened to the whole thing now and I think it's a fantastic album! Out of 14 songs, there's only a few I'm not that keen on, at least not yet. I still think Street of Dreams (which I knew previously as "The Blues", don't know if that ever was official or not) and There Was A Time (the last couple minutes are fantastic!) are amazing songs, among others. It's a great album!

The credits page in the booklet is hilariously over the top. At least Axl is giving credit where it's due! I'm surprised how much of Buckethead's material was used. He's credited on pretty much every song. I was under the impression one of the reasons the album took so long was because Axl was re-recording tracks of band members who left. Buckethead is even pictured as one of the band members.

Unfortunately, that's the thing. It's a great record, but it will never live up to the hype. No matter how good it is, most people will say it's a disappointment. It's like the Phantom Menace of rock albums...except good. ;)

I think a couple of the ballads are verging on being whiny, the rockers though, I really like all of them.

I don't know...Estranged and the like were just as whiny as anything on Chinese Democracy. Not to say that's a bad thing...I like those songs.

I just got through the first listen. It's a bit weird to hear the songs I've already heard but in better quality. I'm surprised how good Riad N' The Bedouins is actually. Shackler's Revenge really grows on you. I think the title track is the weakest song.

I love Sorry, and This I Love is just beautiful.

It's not bloated like the Illusion albums, I love it. I don't mind that it took 14 years, if Axl wanted that much time to make the album that's fine with me. More power to him.

Everyone seems to mention the title track as one of the weakest, but I really like it. I think the way it opens is a fantastic way to re-introduce the band. The crunching guitar bit is like; "I'm back...fuck you." :)

I didn't like Shackler's Revenge on first listen, either, but you're right...it grows on you. It's got one of the most obviously Buckethead guitar bits on the album.

Yeah I like it, I dunno, maybe Better would have been a good intro as well. But you can see why it took him so long to make this album, the amount of guitars and vocal layers and everything else...only Axl could have made this album.

Everything I've heard is terribly dated - sounds like mid-90s era industrial rock. It sounds more than anything like Marilyn Manson's "Holy Wood" album, or Gravity Kills, or any of that slew of NIN imitators from that period.

12-13 years ago the sound at least would have been current (although still wildly unoriginal), now, it sounds like an album that's been in the works for, well, 15 or so years, while time passed it by.

Still, I'm sure Axl will make a lot of money, and if GNR fans like it, hey, more power to them. It's been a long wait. I'm just a bit disappointed, because Axl is a geniunely talented guy and I thought he could have done better than this.

I'm incredibly baffled by this.

Very little of it sounds anything like industrial rock, Marilyn Manson or Nine Inch Nails. Maybe one song.

Otherwise, it sounds like Guns N' Roses. Sure, you can make an argument for that being dated...but completely mis-classify it?

If you're expecting to hear anything like GNR has previously done, you're in for a disappointment. This is more like an Axl Rose solo album. It's overblown, pompous and experimental, but that's not a bad thing. Reminds me of some of the late '70s stuff from the stones or Alice cooper in that regard. You can hear a little Queen and Elton John in there as well.
Sure, I miss the original band, but clearly they were too volatile to last very long, kinda like the Sex Pistols. If they had sobered up and got their shit together and were still around today, they'd probably be pretty boring, like Aerosmith is now. Best to remember them the way they were, although I'd love to be proven wrong by seeing at least Slash and Duff rejoining the band and recording a kickass album.
