Gun man on the lose in Cumbria

News update ~ the government are now concerned that the killer may not have had a licence of weapons! Like that would make it worse?
"Sorry your husband/wife/whoever was killed but he did have a licence for the gun!" :klingon:

Someone at the news agency hasn't had their crack laced coffee yet... or maybe they have? :shifty:

If he had a licence people would want the rules tightened but now they will have to find something else to blame IE viedo games/films?

This is just too depressing ~ I think it's time to watch Bridget Jone's Diary :)

Given that they banned handgun ownership a few years back (to prevent such rampages, so obviously this is a figment of our imagination) I'd be more surprised if he had a licence...

Don't worry, the government will find something to ban, cos that's how UK governments always deal with this sort of thing.

Why is it always the quiet ones?

you know i really hate how in these type of news reports they always have to quote someone saying that. I think it sends this terrible message that quiet peole who keep to themselves are "not the norm" & should be suspect. I hate that b/c Im quiet & like to keep to myself,:p but damn I dont want people wondering if Im some looney who will go mental b/c my coffee's too cold or something.

They have postponed Coronation Street (UK soap opera)because apparently it has a character holding a couple of others at gunpoint ~ how is that going to change what happened

No handgun has been reported as being involved in this offence. Plenty of people hold these types of weapons perfectly legally, especially in farming areas.

One of the survivors interviewed on the BBC says an assault rifle was involved (though this may not be accurate, as people tend not to really take notice of such details beyond "He's shooting at me and I'm gonna die") - which were banned after Hungerford in 1985

Various witnesses have come out with 'assault rifle', 'sniper rifle', 'shotgun' - the official consensus seems to be leaning shotgun. As per policy with exhibits, the police are only saying 'a firearm' was recovered. Realistically, for someone in the UK without significant criminal ties to get hold of an assault rifle would be pretty good going. But shotguns and certain types of rifles aren't uncommon in certain parts of the country - he may even have legally owned it.

ETA: It now appears police have recovered two weapons. But again, no confirmation on types.

I think you may have a point there!

Heard on the radio this morning that the firearms were legally owned - but I don't know the source of that.
