Because Journey is more pop oriented, Schon's guitar work is understated and often underrated, but he's an awesome guitarist.

I'm a big Neal Schon fan. Some of his best non-Journey work is Beyond the Thunder, Piranna Blues, and the HSAS Album Through the Fire. He also did some interesting work with Jan Hammer in the 80s.

Another underrated guitarist that hasn't been mentioned yet is Jeff Beck. His Guitar Shop album is a lot of fun and gets regular play on my car stereo.

Agreed on Schon being underrated because of Journey's "pop" leanings.

I would add some non-hard rock guys to my list:
Steve Howe (especially his solo work)
Steve Morse (he can do hard rock obviously (Deep Purple), but his earlier stuff is pretty amazing)
Eric Johnson
 
Jeff Healey is among my favourite guitarists. He was unique, bless him.

I also like Rivers Cuomo. Not necessarily for his playing (although that's good too) but for his tone. I heard the Blue Album when I was a kid and I was just fucking floored that anybody could make a guitar sound that huge. Granted, there were some overdubs and stuff but it largely persists when you hear them live.

I had the pleasure of seeing Velvet Revolver live a few years ago on the tour for Contraband, and got my copy signed by the whole band. (Scott Weiland is a dick by the way :lol: )

Still, great show, Jimmy Page and Brian May were there too propping up the bar which was great.

My only criticism of Slash is that while he is a tremendously fluid player, I just don't think he is that diverse. I have never heard him play a lick or a run that surprised me. In fact Libertad is the record he has played on I think that stretched him most as player, and even that is pretty predictable stuff.

Thanks for posting more of your Les Paul btw, that really is a peach!

Besides some of the obvious choices like Santana, Brian May or Mark Knopfler, I suggest Jimmy Griffin of Bread. (RIP)
And David Gilmour.

As for bass, I've always been partial to Chris Squire of YES.

And Allman, Alvin Lee, and Andre Segovia (all start with "A" for some reason-not intentional!) are certainly worthy of respect, as is Robert Fripp.

I noticed a distinct lack of Clapton. As a non-musician, I can't really say who's technically good but isn't he nicknamed "God"?

I own a Time Life recording of classic Black music (an overview from the earliest recordings to the 1990s) and Robert Johnson seemed to play a pretty mean blues guitar....

I should also add Chris Smither, one of the greatest finger pickers I've ever heard. My dad saw him at the Mariposa Folk Festival a few years ago and bought his album on the spot. When he played it for me and said it was all one guy I called bullshit until presented with video evidence. Dude has skills.
