Guitar Hero: World Tour

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I haven't picked this up myself, yet. After just getting "Rock Band 2", this has to wait for another paycheck. I don't plan on getting the full band kit, since the RB instruments work with it, but I'll probably get a single guitar since I've only got one RB guitar.

The set list looks cool enough. I've glanced at a few of the videos already up on YouTube.

The IGN.com review was not flattering towards the music editor part of the game. According to them, the interface is convoluted and somewhat confusing, and somewhat more importantly:

My third issue with the recorded tracks is that they sound like crap (and I'm not just talking about my impossible-to-play death metal attempts).
...
The end result is that the songs sound only slightly better than a MIDI song, and I don't know how much of that I could take over the long run. Yeah, it might be funny to play a new wave version of the Smurfs theme song, but I doubt anyone will take any music recorded here seriously since everything winds up sounding like a ringtone.

So what's everyone's thoughts? Inevitably, it will be compared with RB and RB2 - Is it a favorable comparison?

I was on the fence on this one. But since my second Rock Band guitar just died (motherfucker), I'm in the market for a new guitar. So I think I'll pick up the game+guitar bundle. Might as well get an extra game if I'm spending that much.

Bumping this thread rather than starting a new one.

I got my copy yesterday. I only had a short while to play it. This appears to be the first Guitar Hero game to require an instrument to play. I've got a Guitar Hero III guitar.

Despite the changes to career mode (where you play small gigs with a few songs followed by possibly an encore or a guitar battle), it feels a bit like more of the same. I'm unlikely to experiment much with recording studio part and I don't play online.

Still, more of the same isn't so bad. The actual gameplay is as fun as ever. I can't believe the new Beginner difficulty setting. As far as I can tell you just press down any random button and strum in time with the music.

I do like the fact that you can change difficulty settings whenever you like. All games should do this.

I played it for an hour or so before Fallout 3 came out. I do like the music creator thing in terms of getting songs. It seems like it's horrible for actually making songs though.
But yeah, they do sound like midi songs... but I guess that makes sense, since they have a midi import mode for one of the versions.

I kind of find it annoying, like Rock Band, that the achievements require multiplayer. But oh well. :p

I was a GH II and GH III person, but after getting Rock Band and investing in all those downloadable songs, I don't see any reason to go back. After all, Rock Band made their DLC compatiable with Rock Band 2.

Guitar Hero III's DLC wouldn't be compatible with Guitar Hero IV. Guitar Hero III didn't have vocals or drums.

The only Guitar Hero III DLC that is compatible is the Metallica Death Magnetic album but they were able to plan ahead for that.

GH II and III DLC aren't compatible with each other. They sort of lost me after that.

Again, not their fault. Guitar Hero II was, as you probably realise, written by Harmonix. They took the source code with them when MTV bought them out.

Neversoft had to pretty much rewrite the game from scratch.
