Guest Actors Who Could Have Carried a Series

Reading the thread in the TNG forum about the series ending with "All Good Things.." as opposed to Nemesis made me wonder about the guest actors who appeared in Star Trek and could have carried a Star Trek series if given the opportunity (playing a role similar to that of Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, Stewart, Spiner, etc., in terms of importance). Below is my list.

Mark Alaimo, Michael Ansara, Vaughn Armstrong, Casey Biggs, John Colicos, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Greenwood, Bob Gunton, JG Hertzler, Famke Janssen, Penny Johnson, Dina Meyer, Ricardo Montalban, Tricia O'Neil, Eric Pierpoint, Christopher Plummer, William Sadler, Christian Slater, Susanna Thompson, Tony Todd, David Warner, Peter Weller, Paul Winfield

So, effectively this is a hypothetical list of "Who would be a good Captain or XO?"

I'd say out of your list, I agree with Michael Ansara, Bob GUnton, Famke Janssen, John Colicos, Christopher Plummer, William Sadler, David Warner, Paul Winfield and Peter Weller.

I don't really count Ricardo Montalban, Eric Pierpoint and (finally) Christian Slater as they did lead a successful series, so it's kind of a moot point.

I'd also throw in Michelle Forbes to the list as she has proven to be a dynamic and fascinating actress with varied roles over the years, each of them quite believable and nuanced.

Michelle Forbes, Marc Alaimo (he would have to be a captain with a dark secret), Bruce Greenwood, Susanna Thompson, Tony Todd, and I would add Andreas Katsulas and James Sloyan.

^Katsulas and Sloyan are solid choices, too. :techman:

Id add Andrew Robinson to the mix as well.

You forgot "Fantasy Island"?

No, I did Not. Re-read what I wrote above.

I specIfically cited/eliminated Montalban, Pierpoint And Sater because they'd already starred in TV series of their own, Montalban's being the most successful.

Back in the late 90s I was quite a fan of both Famke Janssen and Ashley Judd so I'd have liked a spinoff with those two. Throw in Dina Meyer and it would have been unmissable television for me.

^Agreed. Carey completely ignored the canon established by "Cause and Effect." I also didn't care for her portrayal of the main TOS cast; Bateson and his crew would have seen Kirk, Spock and company as colleagues, not as mythological figures to be worshiped.

I like how Christopher handled the Bateson/Bozeman stuff by including the DTI, taking care of the temporally displaced. Bateson's knowledge and experience was put to good use. Kelsey Grammer would rock a movie version of Watching the Clock and don't forget Bateson's involvement in Destiny.

I just realized as I was carrying my complete set of TNG DVDs from beside the TV back to my DVD cabinet that *I* could carry a series, no problem.
