While that may not be a good enough reason. There is one reason that is sure to work:
Bureaucracy.
Oh, you mean before the launch of the DY-100 class in the 1990s.
*Classic uniforms instead of sweaters.
*Phasers instead of Laser Pistols/Phase Pistols.
*No video intercoms.
*Tablet computers/PADDs instead of printed readouts and clipboards.
*Klingons with ridged foreheads.
*Blue chairs instead of white chairs.
*TOS communicators instead of see-thru.
*No motion detection ("Records show the Talos group has never been explored.")
*No landing party jackets, hats, or utility belts.
*Phasers instead of Laser Pistols/Phase Pistols.

It is my understanding that Spock was motioning to the crewman sitting at the console to go to the next slide; not that he was controlling it with is hand..
Apparently some news articles regarding the series have accidentally stated that the captain of the Discovery itself is a Klingon, rather than a separate Klingon ship as we know, causing confusion among many fans who have already dropped the show due to such a glaring continuity error.
Maybe those fans need to wait and see and stop reading third hand reports.
Pfft, I drop my shows at 4th hand reports, who has time to wait for them to get to third hands.
By then it's old news.
To be honest, this does sound cool.
That wouldn't be a continuity error.
A Continuity error would be not showing flat headed ones.
