When Iron Man came out years ago, who would have thought that we'd get a movie in the series that took place in outer space and featured a talking raccoon? Well, here we have it and the buzz so far is very good.

"With all the usual superheroes doing the same old same old for nine movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was getting a little too safe and dangerously repetitive. Guardians of the Galaxy gleefully breaks all the rules. This tenth movie in the Marvel series is not just good, it’s great as it blasts off into new territory with biting satire and radical thinking.

...the Guardians are led by a deliciously bonkers Chris Pratt as the orphaned and abducted Earthling Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord). Arrested for theft of a powerful orb, he is jailed with a green-skinned, yet gorgeous assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a literal-minded, muscle-bound warrior named Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a genetically modified, rapscallion raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Rocket’s best buddy, a humanoid plant named Groot (voiced with remarkable vitality by Vin Diesel, especially considering the creature’s limited vocabulary).

I've got tickets to the 2-D showing at my local Regal for 7:40cst.
I'm highly looking forward to this and will give a report and grade tomorrow.

Who has the earliest viewing tonight? If I wanted to do 3-D I could've seen the IMAX at 7pm but I just don't see value in 3-D for my movie experience.
 
I would have been going right now, if work hadn't screwed me over with my hours. So now I'll be going tomorrow instead, and I can't wait!

My friend and I always go for the 3D option just because why not, but I'm hoping this actually utilizes it a bit, rather than most fair- Iron Man 3 for example. We saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last week too and that wasn't really worth it in 3D.
 
I saw it this morning (about 8 hours ago).

When this was announced I was pretty sure this would be the MCU's first real misfire (Iron Man 2 wasn't that bad). An obscure team, no 'big' heroes, nothing to latch onto. Oh, a dumb premise, a tree and a rodent. Even casting the radiant Karen Gillan didn't give me much hope.

As time went on I started to get a bit more optimistic. A good cast, fun trailers, maybe (just maybe) it wouldn't suck too badly. It might even be fun.

Well, it's a blast ! It's every bit as good as I might have hoped if I'd had high expectations. I can't say how well it represented the comics as I haven't read 'em, but it's fast, funny, exciting, has engaging characters (especially Groot somehow) and I just loved it and so did Jr.

I hope this gets good word of mouth as I get the feeling it could live or die by it. Thankfully, there's not much competition out there at the moment.

Sadly, I'd been spoiled for the after credit scene, but Jr.'s face was priceless. A real WTF moment...

I gave it an A - it'd have been A- but 'little Groot' got it an extra point. It's just short of The Avengers and Winter Soldier in my book. Not at all bad for a tongue in cheek romp !

P.S. - for a change, the 3D actually added to it.

I haven't written a full review yet. Solid 'A' from me. So much fun with a lot of heart. The cast were great, no big complaints. Looking forward to more and hopefully a meeting between the Guardians and the Avengers in the future :cool:.
 
Saw it. I have to say it was a typical Marvel movie with very good action and humor. The movie also benefited from not taking itself to seriously, which is understandable considering the premise.

The movie did suffer from things that bugged me in Thor 2: Underdeveloped villain that want to destroy the world for reasons. A planet unable to defend itself from one enemy ship even after waging a whole war with them.

About the post credit scene: disappointing. Howard says one whole line and it's over.

Solid B+.
 
I was pretty hyped for it, based on the director and the trailers, and the movie was even better than I expected. It's the most entertaining movie I've seen at least since Pacific Rim.

A+.
 
A very entertaining film and a wonderful entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it's so different. Like I said in the initial post... Who would have thought that they'd take it this far?

  • I'd say this was something between Star Wars and Spaceballs.

  • The 3D really was spectacular. The complete opposite of the recent Planet of the Apes movie. I'm not saying that I'm warming up to 3D or anything because I'm not you know, but this was one of my better experiences.

  • We've talked about how changing the soundtrack of a show or movie can drastically change the whole tone. You can even take a gritty drama and turn it into a comedy by just making that one change, and this movie is a prime example of that. Adding a mixed tape of classic tunes to ordinarily dire moments really lightened this fim up profoundly.

  • Looks like we've got quite a story here with these infinity gems. I take it that they'll take up a lot of phase 3.

  • The Broker looked like Leonard Nimoy.

  • Bradley Cooper put in a great performance as Rocket Raccoon. I didn't even recognize his voice.

  • The giant severed head in space... Who's was it, or what was it? Will this be revisited at some point?

  • Want to see more of Zoe Saldana in action? Check out Colombiana. It's a flawed movie but she's quite good in it.

  • That was the most off-the-wall post credit scene yet.
 
I think it's great to see a film that doesn't take itself so seriously, but in this case the self-referential humour, pop culture references, and general silliness was no more than a mask used to hide the barebones plot and lack of quality.

Starlord mentioned Kevin Bacon and Footloose. It's funny because it's a reference. And, as this film repeatedly shows, a reference is all that you need to make a joke.

Rocket says that Drax takes everything literally. Cue several jokes where Drax takes a metaphor literally. Such clever writing.

Of course, that's not say that the film was terrible or even bad. It was okay. I gave it a C-. It's a passing grade, but come on Marvel. You can do better than this.
 
Hugely enjoyable, very funny, surprisingly moving - a great summer movie. It's the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time and I can't wait to go see it again.

BTW, I somehow totally missed Nathan Fillion's supposed cameo. Was he the voice of Howard? The audience was laughing when he spoke, so I really didn't hear the voice.

AFAIR, it's probably the big blue guy who tried to intimidate Peter Quill.

BTW, there is a Lloyd Kaufman cameo in one of the first prison scenes.
 
Just got back - LOVED it.

Some TRULY STUNNING scenes that made me either very excited or very worried for Ep. VII!!!

I know nothing of the guy who played Peter Quill but he is SMOKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!

LOTS of fun and humour and a GREAT time at the cinema!!!!


Saying that, I'm sure there'll be lotsa neckbeards who find things wrong with it. Guess what? You don't matter and you're wrong.
 
Really enjoyed it, faults I can pick are minor. I'll pick my rating after second viewing but somewhere between B and A.
