A general increase along with a cap on top wages?
It may work in Switzerland but I don't think it would work here. We can't afford that. The required tax increases would go through the roof, I would think.

Why wouldn't it work here? The people of Switzerland are thinking, functioning, rational human beings. The people of the United States are thinking, functioning, rational human beings. Our economies are both based on regulated capitalism, so why wouldn't it work? It's like when someone says the U.S. needs UHC, and someone replies, "oh, that wouldn't work here," as if the U.S. is populated by little green aliens whose requirements are far too different for ordinary humans. It makes just as much sense.
^ Well, first of all, the US has a much larger population than Switzerland. Where's all that money going to come from? To provide a "Basic Living Stipend" (as the Honorverse would call it) to everyone in the US would bankrupt the economy in short order.
And of course the feeling of many Americans towards welfare recipients is, I'm sorry to say, not ideal. This would also be a stumbling block to getting anything like this passed over here.

Our economy is much, much larger than Switzerland's, don't forget that. Yeah, we have more people, but we also have more money; a lot more money. No, it would not bankrupt the U.S.

That's the big thing. It's not that we can't, it's that there are enough of us who won't.
That's a stock argument some throw out. That the U.S. is just too big for this or that. But the argument is counter logical. Because the U.S. workforce is so huge, it would be easier for it to implement these things, as opposed to smaller nations which have much, much fewer resources. Do you know what is costly for the U.S.? Corporate welfare in the trillions. Unregulated corporate capitalism which outsources jobs and wrecks domestic economies. And an out of control defense budget. All those weapons costs us tax payers alot and do not generate any revenue for us. At least with the Universal Basic Income, the recepient can reinvest their income into the economy by way of consumerism. As for the push-button mentality a lot of dummies in the U.S. have towards "welfare", time to crawl out of their bubble and face reality. Times have changed and sooner or later they are going to need to face up to that.
