Grunting Men Lifting Weights At The Gym

okay, you're aware that there are others there, right? It's really annoying to be on the treadmill and hear "uhhhhhhh---UHHHH-ARRRRGH!" every few seconds. Choose a smaller amount of weight or tone it down a notch. No one is impressed by your loud grunting.

Any one else bothered by this?

Choosing a smaller weight kind of defeats the object of lifting weights, lifting things you can already lift does not build muscle.

Yeah, this.

I've been known to grunt a time or two at the gym. There's no point to lifting if you're not struggling.

No one is impressed by your loud grunting.

Believe it or not, they're not doing it to impress you. If gym sounds annoy you when you're on the treadmill, there are plenty of other places where you can walk. Like outside.

Do you complain to your neighbors when you hear them having sex too?

Do you have a Planet Fitness near you?

the guys who are doing it VERY LOUDLY are indeed doing it for attention. These aren't quick bursts of exertion they're loud and lasting. Also, there are other men lifting there who aren't doing the shout/grunt thing. And I do wear headphones and can still hear it.

Grunting alone is not my pet peeve. Some people put themselves past their limit and they understandably react. However, many gyms are just chock full of strutting thugs, bullies, and aspiring MMA psychos. So I shopped around and chose a specific gym. I pay more, but I work out with professionals and older people who are just there to do work. Nobody stares at me. Nobody jumps me in the parking lot. Nobody follows me home.

Well, suck it up.

When people lift weights, I don't mind the grunting, because I'm going to be doing some sighing, gasping, and flailing of my own. I see it as an understanding between people who are torturing their bodies with a purpose.

I practice jujutsu, wich is a soft-form martial art focused on joint locks and shifting balance, so if someone is grunting from exertion, it means they are not doing it right.

On the other hand, our school emphasizes the kiai (especially when performing a kata), so there is a lot of screaming, shouting, wailing, or downright roaring.

Why am I not surprised to hear this. ;)

As for the grunting: Of course it's for show. It's the same logic that leads motorcyclists to loudly rev their engines in public. They do it just to be noticed.

I think I like Planet Fitness's no musclehead policy. But I gave up my gym membership ages ago. The showers and locker rooms were extremely dirty; I'd be more likely to get sick than get healthy.

I get a fair amount of exercise at work, but without that, I wouldn't go to a gym or fitness club. My dad and I used to belong to one, but we quit, it was a total ripoff. You can do a better workout at home with a bike, or jogging around the neighborhood.

And think about it: Why do people *drive* to the gym? ;)

Because they presumably want their exercise to consist of something other than running outside on that specific route.

I haven't been to the gym in more than two months because I've been sick that long, but otherwise I was going pretty regularly. I'm lucky that it's a small gym in my building so the douchebag level is kept to a minimum, but there's still the occasional gross noises. I wear headphones but there's always that one person that's louder than I'd ever play music.

It's not just people lifting weights either. I've had people next to me on the treadmill making noises as well.

I much prefer running around my neighborhood and doing free weights at home. I enjoy the relative privacy , but I concede that's not an option that is viable for everyone. And I can certainly understand wanting to frequent a gym that caters more to people wanting to create healthy life habits, rather than those who are dedicating their lives to building muscle. Both are valid pursuits, but I can understand why a person might want to separate one from the other.

It's really interesting how the location can change the activity so much. Running outside along the lake here would probably be more of a social activity than running on the treadmill at my gym.

Grunting when lifting weight isn't something men only do at the gym; my dad used to do it when getting out of a chair... what I'm saying is that it's something all old men do.

:p
