Ground Forces

Re watching TOS, and I noticed in Balance of Terror and Arena we see two characters sporting a distinctive uniform and emblem. Could these be members of the Federation's ground forces?

I'm guessing these two guys, maybe? Too bad we can't see either insignia better.

Given that they're both assigned to either a planet or a asteroid, but neither a starbase, then sure, a ground force branch.

This was almost certainly a re-use of the same distressed costume. :bolian:

My guess has been that it's for personnel assigned to "outposts": not on starships, but further out on the frontier than starbases. One of the oddest things about those uniforms, besides the unique color, is that Commander Hansen doesn't wear rank stripes.

Yeah, the outpost designation is a reasonable theory, since that's the situation that they both occur in. This has made it into our discussions about uniforms before on the board, but this is definitely one of the lesser-known details, in company with the never-seen again emblem in "The Cage" on this guy.

"Chaplain" perhaps?

As IIRC the only specific role ever implied by the above was Security Guard, I'd say "Combat" is probably more likely.

As far as the sand coloured tunics being non-Starship Service (possibly aka Exploratory Divsion or the Deep Space Exploratory Corps (SDSEC or DEC) that would make a lot of sense. Possibly Starfleet Border Service?

The non-Starship emblems in TOS were often made with little pieces of plastic decorations bought at craft stores. The emblems in BoT and Arena use parts of a plastic decoration that also appears on some of the uniforms in Mirror, Mirror. I drew the emblem after seeing a photo of a group of uniform emblems being shown at a Trek convention. I put my drawing up at Memory Alpha, but, for some reason, it was removed.

That all rank braid would be missing from this uniform variant would be nicely in keeping with the "ground forces" theory: you don't want enemy snipers to see your rank, especially if it happens to be high. But how many enemy snipers would there be inside that asteroid outpost...?

The extras from "The Cage" are as likely to be medical personnel as security: the command crew had just been in a big fight, many of them wore bandages, and there might have been real concern that Pike would collapse on his command chair at any moment. Better keep not just medics but also a chaplain nearby!

I wonder if they were personnel from UESPA, instead of the Federation. Spock does call them Earth outposts throughout "Balance of Terror".

The hero ship is also considered an "Earth ship" and working for "UESPA" at times; Kirk doesn't change his shirt for those occasions.

The thing about TOS costumes is that there is no simple logic by which a specific color or shape could be associated with a specific task or responsibility or theater of operations. Wearing red tells essentially nothing (you may be a soldier, a social scientist or a practical engineer; you may also change color without explanation); wearing the Sciences insignia on your chest, likewise (the same as above, really!); wearing an arrowhead around the insignia, ditto (you may serve on a big ship or a small one, on a starbase, near Kirk or far).

Yet that's verisimilitude for ya. Postulating that there is an underlying logic to all this, just a very complex one, is not only something we're allowed to do - it's sorta necessary, for not making Starfleet look like a bunch of fools.

It was removed after being moved a few times and then believed to be a copyright violation. I restored it just now, with proper citation, and placed it back on the Assignment patch page.

That should keep it for a little while longer.
