Greg Berlanti to direct The Flash for Warner Bros?

From IESB:

Yesterday was quite a whirlwind. For what seems like many moons we didn't hear a peep from The Brothers Warner. After years of leaks so big they could have sunk the Titanic they somehow came up with a formula to keep things quiet in Burbank. For a short while at least. After fans were treated with the news a couple weeks ago that Christopher Nolan was going to guide a new Superman film to theaters, yesterday it was revealed that both David Goyer and Jonah Nolan are lined up to write the script. While we're here, why not throw a couple more logs on the already crackling fire?

IESB has learned exclusively that WB is lining up a director for another high profile DC character; Greg Berlanti is the leading contender to helm "The Flash". The name should ring a bell or two, Berlanti wrote "Green Lantern" with one my favorites Marc Guggenheim and was once attached to direct the film before WB settled on Martin Campbell. From what IESB is hearing WB is very high on Berlanti from his prep on "Green Lantern" and would love him to run with "The Flash". If you remember, two weeks to this day, IESB reported that we would be hearing some news on "The Flash". Here we are delivering on that promise.

DC Entertainment is surely on fire. Nelson and company are hitting the ground running, pun intended. The Nolan Bros. and David Goyer getting their hands all over the Caped Crusader and The Man of Steel sounds about right."Green Lantern" moving forward under the watchful and capable eye of Martin Campbell and possibly now Greg Berlanti dashing into the fray with "The Flash".

He was the show runner behind my favorite TV drama of all time, Everwood, and Jack & Bobby for The WB/CW. I wouldn't have pegged him for the director of The Flash -- he was once tapped to helm Green Lantern which he co-wrote before WB handed the project to the more experienced Martin Campbell instead -- but Berlanti is a sure talent and can handle the emotional intricacies of drama and interpersonal dynamics. I say give him a shot.

Never heard of him, has he directed anything before?
His directorial debut was The Broken Hearts Club in 2000. After that he turned to TV work, where he's exec produced a number of series (including Everwood, Eli Stone, and Brothers & Sisters). He did a lot of development work on Green Lantern when he was attached as director, and Warners were impressed with that work, but ultimately felt the film needed someone more experienced and turned to Martin Campbell. However, Berlanti has since got more experience as a film director under his belt, having directed the forthcoming Life as We Know It for Warners.

Does anyone think that WB is going to make formal announcements, ever? Or are they just going to hire people for specific projects without comment, and continue letting the blogs spread the news?

A formal announcement is expected soon. I think WB wants to just individually get these projects off the ground and then culminatively announce all of them when DC Entertainment is expected to announce their line-up soon.

I'm getting annoyed by these "leaks" and would much prefer a proper official announcement from DC ENT. Too much going on to get excited about to only find out in an announcement that none of these reports are actually true haha.

Re: 'The Flash' development

DC Entertainment's all screwed up. They've got the guy who's supposed to be playing the Flash over on the wrong film! :p

I'm personally tired of leaks and announcements and trailers that explain everything from start to finish. The best movie-going experiences I've ever had were with films I knew absolutely nothing about. It's all but impossible to accomplish that anymore.

And yes, I know the irony of saying that in a thread like this. Doesn't change my opinion anyway.

Ryan Reynolds can still play The Flash. And maybe Chris Evans can play a different Flash. :p

I'm actually kind of excited at the prospect of a Flash movie. There are probably a ton of cool things they could do to realize his speed in CGI nowadays.

Well he can't play 2 guys in red suits

Why not? Buster Crabbe played Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers? (Not to mention Tarzan.)

And how many swashbuckling pirates and what-not did Errol Flynn play over the course of his career?

Lon Chaney Jr. played Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dracula, and the Mummy.

Hell, Roger Moore was the Saint and James Bond.

There's no rule that says actors can only play one superhero.

(We'll just forget about Halle Berry playing both Storm and Catwoman, okay?)

^ I went onto Superherohype.com once, big mistake. Got into it with some kid (he seemed like a kid by the way he was making his half-assed arguments) and he was insistent that one actor can only be allowed to play one comic book superhero. When I countered his argument, he got flummoxed and tried to dismiss me without actually being able to come up with a reason why. His head must've exploded by now with Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds.

I can see DC/Warners not casting the same actor in two of their properties, especially if they have some desire to have a JLA movie down the line (which you know, some exec is thinking even if it happens or not).

“Green Lantern” is a year away from release, but Warner Bros. already is starting development on a sequel.

The studio has hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, all of whom worked on the “Lantern” screenplay, to write a treatment for the second installment.

The trio has also been tapped to pen the treatment for the silver-screen incarnation of “The Flash.”
