Green Lantern - Ryan Reynolds costume revealed!

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

I wouldn't compare this to Iron Man. His suit is armor whereas Green Lantern's is a form-fitting costume.

In any case, this should be interesting. Sounds time consuming and expensive, but I'm sure it'll look great. I hope.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

With a guy as fit as Ryan Reynolds you wouldn't think this would be really necessary but I'll withhold judgment until seeing this "otherworldly" effect. Now if they had gone with the rumored Jack Black instead...

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

So this will be cheaper and look better than anything they could come up with practically?

This isn't Rorschach's mask, or something that warrants the expense and spectacle. Every comic I've ever read, a normal non-alien looking suit looked fine.

Now they're just plain going overboard! No wonder movies cost so much to make these days. CG is great when used with imagination. This just sounds gimmicky.

Reynolds has talked about a suit he tried on, remarking that it was tight in certain places. This means that he'll probably have some version of the suit that isn't CG at all.

Before anyone gets too excited, let's all remember Wolverine's CLAWS were CG last year! :(

(BTW--does this mean if Hal gets knocked unconscious the suit will disappear?)

That's a good question. The ring is supposed to protect him from harm in the first place. But if there were an overwhelming attack against GL, Hal could be hurt but the ring might still function on some level.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Sounds kinda dodgy to me, but then Campbell is an excellent craftsman of film imagery and composition (Legend of Zorro might not have been very good, but it had a terrific look and feel), so I'm entirely willing to give him the benefit of the you-know-what.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Way, way long ago Hal was knocked unconscious in one comic story and observers tried to remove his mask. Didn't work; the ring still prevented it.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Cries of CG gimmickry are not paying attention to what the producers are explaining. They very clearly understand that a GL uniform should not appear Earthly. Even if some comic pencilers have rendered a GL costume as a normal looking creased and wrinkled spandex suit. That's not the point; the filmmakers have put forth a solid argument for this technique.

It's no different than Iron Man. I'm sure that some people insist that a CG-equipped suit /must/ be inferior to some idealized practical suit they're imagining in their head. But that doesn't change the fact that the partially CG suit in the movies allows Iron Man to behave exactly like Iron Man should with no compromises.

Besides, if they just tried to paste a CG transformation onto an otherwise all-practical GL suit, /that/ is what would end up looking out of place.

I don't really see why that needed to be full on CGI, and not just CGI-Glow enhanced. Cheaper, maybe?

Yeah, not crazy about the mask. But the rest of the costume looks cool enough (even though it does kind of look like he's been flayed). :D

I do hope the entire thing isn't green though...

Costumes in early stills from superhero movie almost always look worse than they ultimately do on screen. I like the basic design of the GL costume here, but there's a Photoshop-esque awkwardness to the still that'll hopefully be dispelled once we see actual footage. The same goes for the plastic look of the costumes in Thor.
