GREEN LANTERN might have found villain actor. Possibly homosexual.

Must investigate further.

Jackie Earl Haley, last seen as the vigilante superhero Rorshach in this year's Watchmen and seen next as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, is apparently the top contender to don the green and black tights as the villainous Sinestro in the Ryan Reynolds starrer Green Lantern from Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell.

My take? I'm kind of sick of all the "Jackie Earl Haley for Everything" mentality going on these days. Yeah, he's a talented actor good at playing dysfunctional creepy guys, and I offer him congrats on his career comeback, but I was envisioning someone like David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum) or Ben Kingsley as Sinestro. Haley is a perfectly suitable alternative, though.

What do you guys think?

If they're going to be casting an "old guy" like Jackie, maybe that this means that they are planning on telling THE story of Hal Jordan rather that lackluster origin again which has been in two cartoon movies over the last 2 years...

Emerald twilight.

Hal Jordan has a nervous breakdown and begins cutting off his "friends" hands to get their rings till he finally takes down the Guardians themselves.

Why the hell not start at the end?

I agree with Jackson. Jackie (no relation?!) has been great in everything I've seen him in (well, Watchmen and Little Children) but with the Freddie Krueger gig coming up, there is a risk of familiarity breeding contempt. Having said that, he does his shtick pretty well, so they could do worse.

But is this movie still on? Didn't Ryan Reynolds recently drop hints (admittedly tongue-in-cheek) that because of possible costs it mightn't be made until about 2050 or something?

It is still on. They've just announced that they're no longer filming it in Australia as the weakening of the US dollar dramatically increased the cost of filming there. They're now looking to film it in Canada or Mexico.

Depends who does it, will it be Routh? Will it be a rebooted Superman, how do they figure that one out?
Clint Morris at Moviehole reports he's hearing from people at Warners that they feel they need to start over with a new actor in the role.

Or does this get WB off the hook with having to produce a superman movie to keep the rights?
This isn't a case of Warners being able to extend the rights if they produce a new Superman film within a given time. Certain rights may revert to the Siegel estate in 2011 no matter what Warners does.

I'm fine with Haley, but I do like the idea of Straitharn playing a comic book villain one of these days.

The way the dollar is going, they're going to have to start filming movies in America again. :rommie: Let's see, what place has a nuked-out economy and high unemployment that might make a good, cheap filming location. How about...California?

Yeah, the Canadian dollar is almost on par. Canadian crews might still be cheaper, though.

Oh, and I totally vote for Brandon Routh to stay on. God, that guy gets the shaft. He was great in the role.

What do you think of a possible Superman cameo?

I think it's fine. Routh, of course.

I'd rather have Gary Oldman as Sinestro. I suppose he's a little long in the tooth for it, now...but back in the day when they tended to cast really famous actors as villains and relative unknowns as the heroes in these films, I wanted to see Oldman as Sinestro and Jack Nicholson as Krona.

Oldman always plays villains. That's part of his appeal as Gordon -- Nolan took an actor known for playing bad guys and cast him as a really good guy. I thought that was just cool. I'd like to see that thought process used more often. Simon Pegg would be an interesting choice for Sinestro. Kind of off the wall. That sort of thing.

That's fine, but Oldman could still play Sinestro excellently. I really don't care one way or the other about the novelty of casting against type.

Hell, he was even great in "Lost In Space."

He's played a lot more good guys than bad guys (he's even said this himself). It's just that his bad guy roles are his most known.

Now, make a movie where Christopher Walken, John Malkovich, Gary Oldman, Eric Roberts, F. Murray Abraham and Gary Busey are the good guys and they face off against bad guys Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Eddie Murphy, Matthew McConaughey, Rachel McAdams, Kate Hudson and Renee Zellweger, and you've got something. :)

Jason Isaacs is my top pick to play Sinestro. That's also casting to type, but he'd be great in the part. Haley as Sinestro is intriguing, though.
