Green Lantern (2011)

Yo-yo-ing like crazy at moment. But when have the critics ever decided whether film is a hit? Or good?

While they have no control over whether something is a hit or not, they only offer their personal opinion if it's good or not. Enough of them seem to be saying the same thing... so...

...but, it's all opinion. Not fact.

As a longtime Green Lantern Corps fans, I hope the movie does well despite the bad reviews I've come across so far--one reviewer gave it one out of five stars (ouch!) and called it all but officially silly.

I want to like this despite some reservations. I'm not fond of the cgi suit, but I'll wait to see it in action onscreen. I don't think Ryan Reynolds really looks the part, but then I was skeptical about Michael Keaton and that turned out all right.

The reviews posted are disappointing so far, but I'll see what some reviewers I'm more familiar with have to say tomorrow and I'll eventually see for myself.

I've seen enough films I liked that critics didn't and enough I didn't care for that critics loved. So, we'll see.

Yikes! A very negative review from Hitfix.

First, there's no way my boys are seeing it. The movie in general appears to be written for eight-year-olds, which is appropriate, and a smart move. But Parallax and Hector Hammond, the villains of the film, seem to be in a different film, a much more inappropriate film about a giant weird turd cloud with the head of the Wizard Of Oz that sucks the skeletons out of people before they explode, and his human assistant who grows a disgusting Elephant Man head in scenes where he screams in pain and writhes on the floor like it's a David Cronenberg film.
The film's based on Geoff Johns material, all right.

On the other hand, I like David Cronenberg films.

Yeah, the good old days of March 11, 2011.

...you know, when Source Code was released.

:D Seriously, it's not like good movies suddenly stopped being made after Blade Runner, or that there weren't crappy movies for the entire history of movies.

I'll probably go see it, regardless of the reviews... I was never all that excited by it anyway, so the reviews haven't changed my position. (Never a Ryan Reynolds fan--Bradley Cooper I think would've been better, a dust cloud does not an interesting enemy make, see FF2, and it seems like it's weighed down heavily by cramming all the mythology into 1 movie.)

I'm hoping there will be a SAG screening of it, or something... definitely NOT seeing it in 2D

Well yeah, there's still a chance this can be a mindlessly diverting guilty pleasure like X-Men 3 or the Fantastic Four movies, but personally I was hoping for a good, high quality Green Lantern movie.

It's 3:40pm local time(CST) and my screener is for 7pm. Not sure yet if it's in 2-D or 3-D though the pass does not indicate which.

The sad thing is that some people do care about things like RT, I don't. I've felt for awhile this was the most likely to be the box office stinker regardless of quality. I only hope it's not and I can once again say the critics missed the point. I'll know soon enough.

Oh, see, I didn't find those diverting... annoying, but not diverting...

Apart from Doom (casting and function), found FF thoroughly diverting and entertaining. Liked actors (Alba maybe the least) and cheesy fun of it all, and felt it had same tongue-in-cheek qualities of original Donner Superman and Burton/Schumacher Batman films. But admit am not a comic nerd, so can only judge as film...

For me, it wasn't about being a comic nerd, I just don't think the tongue in cheek qualities worked for me. I liked Thing, but, the rest, meh.

Agree Chiklis/Thing best (but did like Evans and Gruffudd too). 'Comic nerd' not directed at anyone at particular. Just aware some on threads here have that as point-of-reference others may not share. But even if never read GL comic, I at least know who he is. The Big Bang Theory and Google are your friends... (in brightest day, in blackest night, yadda yadda, whatever...)

I thought Ben and Johnny were great. Alba just didn't quite work as Sue, and the same with Gruffudd as Reed. Which is a shame, because I think Gruffudd is a great actor, just not a Reed Richards.

Agreed. I would hardly call the FF movies "good," but they were a lot of cheesy, harmless fun I thought. The scenes between Johnny and the Thing were awesome, and it was kind of refreshing to see some superhero movies that remembered how to have a little bit of fun with the concept.

QFT :) Especially after Batman Begins. Jeez guys, lighten up a little...

Ben and Johnny were the only good things about the FF movies. Sue and Doom were both completely miscast.

I've been a big FF fan, and I also liked the films. Agreed that the Thing and Torch were the best realized. Sue was okay, no real complaints there. Reed though, was a bit of a disappointment. I didn't mind the somewhat understated approach to his character, but I never got the sense that he was the ultra-super-genius he's supposed to be, which is the fun of his character.
